Sandro Galea, MD, DrPH, the Margaret C. Ryan Dean of the School of Public Health at Washington University in St. Louis, has been awarded the 2026 Elizabeth Fries Health Education Award from the CDC Foundation. This accolade recognizes an individual who has made remarkable contributions to health education and promotion via program creation or execution, policy, advocacy, or research. Galea is acknowledged for enhancing a thorough understanding of the determinants that influence health through his writing, speaking, and research endeavors.

In addition to his role as the Eugene S. and Constance Kahn Distinguished Professor in Public Health and vice provost for interdisciplinary initiatives at WashU, Galea is a population health expert, physician, and author. A well-regarded researcher and communicator, he has authored 24 books, 75 chapters, over 1,000 journal articles, and a multitude of public writings concerning the fundamental dynamics that impact human health and strategies to build a healthier global community.

His academic work intersects social and psychiatric epidemiology, concentrating on the behavioral health implications of trauma. He serves as the editor-in-chief of JAMA Health Forum and is a voted member of the National Academy of Medicine.

Galea will be honored with the award at the Society for Public Health Education conference in Portland, Ore., in April. The CDC Foundation oversees and manages the award in collaboration with the James F. and Sarah T. Fries Foundation, which created and finances the award.
