Carla Wood, an educator and head of Florida State University’s School of Communication Science and Disorders (SCSD), has been honored as a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), an organization that confers fellowship status on fewer than 25 individuals each year.
The fellowship is conferred to individuals who have made significant contributions in the areas of speech-language pathology, audiology, and the science of speech and hearing.
“Dr. Carla Wood’s acknowledgment as an ASHA Fellow is not only a testament to her remarkable accomplishments but also signifies the School of Communication Science and Disorders’ dedication to national leadership and innovation within our field,” stated Dean Michelle Kazmer of the College of Communication and Information. “Her commitment inspires our entire community, illustrating how the influence of outstanding scholarship can enhance our college, our university, and the discipline as a whole.”
Wood has been engaged with ASHA for more than 30 years as a certified speech-language pathologist.
“This honor reflects the dynamic community of scholars contributing to such achievements,” Wood remarked. “I feel increasingly motivated to nominate and advocate for our exceptional colleagues for the Fellowship, ensuring our faculty in SCSD are elected each year.”
Wood’s involvement with ASHA has been so significant that she mentioned her “three children grew up thinking that the ASHA national conference was an annual celebration occurring between Halloween and Thanksgiving.”
“I am marking my twentieth year at FSU, with ongoing federal grant support since 2008, thanks to remarkable colleagues and collaborations at FSU,” Wood noted. “During this period, I have observed SCSD double in size along with the number of faculty members acquiring federal research and training grants, embodying the adage that ‘a rising tide lifts all boats.’”
Looking ahead, Wood aims to continue endorsing and showcasing the various initiatives of the SCSD community, encompassing research, training, academics, and clinical excellence.
