The Argument for Black American Patriotism: An Inspiring Talk at FSU’s Institute for Governance and Civics

NOTE: Revised with details regarding rescheduled gathering.

The Institute for Governance and Civics (IGC) at Florida State University is set to present an evening with Glenn Loury, a leading figure in discussions about race and education in the United States.

Loury’s address, initially scheduled for January 23 and postponed due to snow, is part of an exciting series of guest speakers the newly established IGC will feature this spring. Formed in 2023 by the Florida Legislature, the IGC is dedicated to promoting civic literacy and involvement through detailed research, education, and public dialogue focused on the foundational principles of America.

The event is set for April 7, Monday, at 6 p.m. at Club Downunder, 75 N. Woodward Ave. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and light snacks will be served. The lecture will commence at 6 p.m., followed by a Q&A session at 6:35 p.m.

“At the Institute for Governance and Civics, we strive to encourage impactful discussions surrounding the challenges that define our community,” remarked Ryan Owens, director of the Institute for Governance and Civics. “We are privileged to have Dr. Glenn Loury on campus to discuss ‘The Case for Black American Patriotism.’ His profound insights will provide our community with the chance to connect with one of the nation’s leading scholars. This dialogue will enhance our comprehension of patriotism and its significance for all Americans.”

Loury, holding the Merton P. Stoltz Professorship of Social Sciences and is also a Professor of Economics at Brown University and the host of the podcast The Glenn Show, will convey his viewpoints on “The Case for Black American Patriotism” and partake in a question-and-answer segment concerning Black American patriotism, education, and the economy.

A prominent economist, academic, and writer, Loury’s research spans applied microeconomic theory, game theory, industrial organization, natural resource economics, and the economics of race and inequality.

The gathering is complimentary and accessible to the public, though attendees are encouraged to RSVP at fla.st/FFNZIOCX
