Florida State University’s College of Music is poised to create history as it hosts the 2025 International Society of Bassists (ISB) Convention from June 2 to 7 — marking the inaugural occasion for this event to take place in the Southeast.
This week-long gathering will unite internationally acclaimed bassists, instructors, and fans from around the world for an array of masterclasses, workshops, talks, and performances. The convention will highlight the contributions of the double bass to jazz, classical, and contemporary music.
“We are privileged and enthusiastic to welcome the International Society of Bassists Convention to Tallahassee,” stated Todd Queen, dean of the FSU College of Music. “This event not only emphasizes the extraordinary talent within the realm of bass performance but also bolsters Tallahassee’s status as a hub for groundbreaking cultural events.”
The ISB is committed to the promotion of understanding and appreciation for the double bass, offering a platform for exceptional artists, educators, and fans to express their passion and knowledge. Through its biennial convention and various educational programs, the society aims to motivate and support the upcoming generation of bassists globally, acting as a link between different musical traditions and the worldwide music community.

Convention planners expect over 1,000 participants from around the globe, comprising bassists, exhibitors, guest musicians, family members, and music aficionados. Attendees will experience a diverse range of events such as concerts, presentations, workshops, lecture-demonstrations, panel discussions, masterclasses, and exhibitions. Special initiatives like the Young Bassists program and the ISB Next Generation ensembles, tailored for amateur bassists, will also be featured.
“We’re thankful for the chance to host the ISB Convention in Tallahassee for the first time,” said ISB General Manager Madeleine Crouch. “The collaboration with FSU’s College of Music has been remarkable, and we are ready for an inspiring week dedicated to everything bass.”
FSU bass instructors Rodney Jordan, specializing in jazz, and George Speed, focusing on classical, have partnered with the ISB to bring the convention to the region for its first appearance.
“We take immense pride in the vibrant bass program we’ve established at FSU, with two strong studios that collectively offer a dynamic and comprehensive education for undergraduate and graduate bass students,” Speed remarked. “We’re exhilarated by the chance to host this world-renowned convention at our college of music.”
