Florida State University’s Claude Pepper Center Introduces Innovative Data Platform to Tackle Aging Issues in the Sunshine State

The Claude Pepper Center at Florida State University has introduced the Translational Data Platform, an advanced digital resource crafted to deliver interactive maps and dashboards integrating information on behavior, employment, health, and economy concerning Florida’s elderly populations.

Following a year-long introductory period aimed at collecting feedback and enhancing its functionalities, the platform is now accessible to the public and will keep evolving.

“The Translational Data Platform is transforming our comprehension and response to the requirements of senior citizens, offering unparalleled access to real-time information and insights that enable lawmakers, researchers, and families to make educated choices,” stated Dawn Carr, director of the Claude Pepper Center.

This platform empowers users to analyze data in real-time, generating insights specific to Florida. The state’s demographic makeup, which includes one of the highest concentrations of seniors in the U.S., establishes Florida as a crucial area for examining national aging patterns.

“We have communicated with various stakeholders to determine how we could best assist those making choices regarding older adults and their welfare, as well as the families of seniors in Florida,” Carr elaborated.

The Translational Data Platform has been employed to construct a map that highlights the risk of social isolation in individuals over 65, aiming to pinpoint areas across the state that need attention. This map has already been showcased to organizations like the Florida Department of Elder Affairs to aid policymakers in focusing their efforts.

“Our primary focus lies in age and the aging process, examining how these interact with health and policy,” remarked Fabio Correa, a research engineer at the Pepper Center. “Our maps and dashboards are continually updated with the newest public data from credible sources, including our own peer-reviewed studies.”

Developed with Esri ArcGIS and Microsoft Power BI, the platform streamlines intricate datasets. The supportive legislative environment in the state has enabled the Claude Pepper Center to leverage data from various agencies throughout Florida.
