The certificate, provided by the Department of Interior Architecture and Design, seeks to assist students in cultivating a well-rounded comprehension of design applicable in many sectors. The department boasts faculty renowned for their proficiency in design thinking and visual communication.

“This certificate embodies the college’s broader vision to encourage interdisciplinary cooperation across FSU,” stated Jim Dawkins, chair of the department. “In a time when visual communication is essential for attracting and retaining focus, this certificate responds to an increasing need for professionals who can adeptly express concepts through design.”

Designed to benefit students across a diverse array of fields, including marketing, business, communication, and the arts, the 13-hour certificate program presents a future-oriented curriculum that merges foundational knowledge with sophisticated design capabilities.

“Through a targeted curriculum that fuses vital design principles with advanced technologies, the certificate equips students from varied backgrounds to excel in industries that are progressively recognizing the importance of creativity and innovation,” remarked Amy Huber, associate chair of the Department of Interior Architecture & Design and the program’s first director.

“This program guarantees that all FSU graduate students, irrespective of their discipline, possess the design literacy required to engage meaningfully in today’s multifaceted visual realm, allowing them to communicate effectively and create a significant impact in any sector.”

— James Frazier, dean of the College of Fine Arts

The certificate program features a streamlined course sequence designed to improve students’ employment opportunities without substantially prolonging their academic journey. The initiative enables participants to incorporate graphic design expertise into their primary areas, offering a competitive advantage in the job market.
