Florida State University wrapped up its second annual Horizons Unlimited Conference aimed at first-generation students, featuring a keynote dialogue between President Richard McCullough and FSU Trustee Maximo Alvarez.
Addressing attendees on Monday in Ruby Diamond Concert Hall, McCullough and Alvarez exchanged personal anecdotes, underscored the significance of education, and contemplated the journeys that influenced their lives.
“This conference is particularly meaningful to me because, like many of you, I was a first-generation college student,” McCullough remarked. “I have experienced firsthand the obstacles and victories that accompany pioneering that path. And believe me, the effort you’re investing now will unlock opportunities that you might not yet envision.”
The full-day gathering reinforced FSU’s dedication to the success of first-generation students. Almost 25% of FSU’s undergraduate population are the first in their families to pursue a college degree, with many discovering assistance through the Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement (CARE).
