FSU’s Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Honored with NASPA Pillar of the Profession Award

Florida State University Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Zduy Chu has been honored with the Pillar of the Profession Award by the Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA). This accolade acknowledges leaders who have made a significant, enduring influence on their institutions, establishing a legacy of commitment.

NASPA serves as the foremost association dedicated to the progress, vitality, and sustainability of the student affairs profession. Annually, NASPA honors individuals who showcase exceptionalism in the realm of higher education, have held leadership roles within NASPA, either regionally or nationally, and are acknowledged by their peers for their substantial contributions to the educational field.

“I am profoundly grateful to be recognized among the distinguished Pillars for 2025,” stated Chu. “While this honor is bestowed upon me, it rightfully belongs to numerous individuals who have supported me throughout my path. I sincerely appreciate this recognition amidst so many remarkable professionals in our industry.”

At FSU, Chu supervises Fraternity & Sorority Life, University Housing and Childcare, New Student and Family Programs, Student Engagement, and the Student Affairs of the Panama City campus. His prior experience includes the role of Deputy Chief Officer of Student Affairs at Valdosta State University, as well as leadership positions at Georgia State University and the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Chu continues to contribute to this profession by participating on various regional and national boards within and beyond NASPA. Between 2006-2012, he was a member of NASPA’s Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP) National Board of Directors. He resumed his involvement in 2017 and was named Chair of the Board in 2022. In June 2023, he was recognized by Region III with the NUFP Champion Award for his extensive and influential service to the initiative.

“Dr. Zduy Chu exemplifies the qualities and achievements that characterize a NASPA Pillar of the Profession,” remarked Amy Hecht, vice president for Student Affairs. “His steadfast commitment, innovative leadership, and meaningful contributions to student affairs make him worthy of this prestigious honor.”

With more than 20 years of experience dedicated to enhancing student achievement and leadership development, Chu has launched initiatives that tackle vital student necessities and concentrated his efforts on success, engagement, and retention.

“Dr. Chu consistently offers us his time, and his enthusiasm is always remarkable and contagious,” commented FSU student Malena Romero, chief of staff for Student Government Association and a resident assistant. “He embodies the essence of a true leader, inspiring and motivating those around him to strive for excellence. His unwavering support and commitment have a profound effect on our lives.”

Chu attained his Doctor of Education in educational leadership and administration from Georgia State University, along with both his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Arkansas. He is also a certified administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory and serves as a facilitator for “StrengthsQuest” and “LeaderShape.”
