Crafting Harmony: FSU Artists and Musicians Unite to Create a Bass in Just Days

Bass players from across the globe gathered in Tallahassee this month for the International Society of Bassists (ISB) Convention, a week filled with performances, seminars, workshops, and dialogues focused on the double bass — featuring a joint initiative to construct a double bass within one week.

Taking place from June 2-7, the event attracted over 1,000 participants globally to the campus of FSU.

A notable highlight of the convention was the Build-a-Bass Project, a weeklong endeavor where luthiers — artisans who create and repair string instruments — teamed up with music fans to build a double bass on the premises. This project provided a unique, hands-on chance to witness and engage in the detailed art of instrument crafting.

“Typically, luthiers operate in solitude in their workshops, but this convention encourages teamwork, uniting master luthiers and aspiring enthusiasts to assemble a bass in merely one week,” stated Sandor Ostlund, a double bass professor at Baylor University and president-elect of ISB. “We experienced a spirit of collaboration throughout FSU. The kindness of their faculty and staff and their readiness to assist was impressive.”
