While numerous students spent portions of their summer basking in the sun by the pool or relaxing at home, 10 intrepid young individuals from Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia opted for an alternative experience: exploring streams, interacting with reptiles, and measuring tree trunks.
What they discovered was far more than mere mud and moss. It was a practical introduction to the marvels of Warnell, along with the science, narratives, and stewardship associated with the natural environment.
As part of the University of Georgia’s Center for Continuing Education Summer Academy, the inaugural Wonders of Warnell camp invited students from upper middle school to high school to step into the roles of a forester, biologist, or environmental educator. Over five exhilarating days, participants not only gained insights into how natural resources influence the world around them — they experienced it directly: nets, drones, owl pellets, and more.
