Tom Fail’s experience in higher education is profoundly personal and anchored in a distinct sense of direction. With two qualifications already achieved and a flourishing career in Ed Tech, Tom shares his rationale for opting to pursue a third academic credential.

His narrative illustrates his intimate relationship with higher education and how the online iMBA program from Gies College of Business has been instrumental in that journey. Nonetheless, it was not a walk in the park. As I’ve shared with my wife, this is something I genuinely take pride in. I could have given up multiple times, but I persisted, and I’m truly grateful I did.”

Tom Fail embodies the essence of a lifelong learner with an acute awareness of the advantages higher education can offer. Having not been the most exceptional student in high school, Tom switched gears upon transitioning to his first higher education experience.

“In my youth, I recognized the importance of attending college to determine my life’s direction. My parents sacrificed significantly to enable my sister and me to pursue college, so once I arrived, I realized how hard they had toiled for this opportunity. I told myself, ‘I can’t afford to waste this chance.’”

After successfully earning a degree in economics and a master’s in management, Tom entered the job market, embarking on roles with what he described as “some of the least enjoyable organizations: the IRS, the US Senate, and a student loan agency.” Ultimately, Tom found his niche in ed-tech and has never looked back.

“I aspired to build a purpose-driven career that could genuinely influence lives.”

Given his extensive business background and newfound passion for his career, what motivated Tom to pursue another master’s degree?

“When I obtained my first degree, I lacked real-world experience. Grasping the inner workings of a business is vital: understanding the business model, finance, marketing, and the tangible ways a business expands. While it may sound cliché, I wanted to integrate academic rigor and insights into my current role.”

Exploring Relevant Avenues for Skill Enhancement

Not initially looking for another full degree, Tom explored Coursera for methods to enhance his management approach. With two new direct reports, he aimed to refine his competencies and ensure his leadership repertoire was efficient.

“The initial course I undertook was motivated by my new responsibility to two team members, and I wanted to refresh my leadership skills. Managing Teams by Illinois was among the best options I discovered to help clarify how I wanted to present myself as a leader. This course seamlessly integrates into the iMBA, marking my first engagement with the degree material.”

Enrolling in the iMBA program felt like a logical progression since the classes he was participating in contributed toward the complete degree.

“It was an excellent first-hand experience, and that initial class drew me into the degree track. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and I thought this was likely a solid starting point for the online degree.”

The Flexibility to Juggle Life, Work, and Education

Balancing a full-time job and other personal obligations made it clear that a traditional, on-campus MBA wouldn’t accommodate his lifestyle. Managing the workload proved challenging, yet Tom appreciated the adaptability the program provided.

“Illinois offers significant flexibility. You can accelerate or decelerate according to your life’s demands. They provide commendable curriculum outlines for 2, 2.5, and 3-year plans. You can also liaise with your online advisor to determine the best approach for you.”

The asynchronous content and the ability to learn at his own pace enabled him to engage meaningfully with faculty and classmates during networking events and online interactions.

Immediate Learning Application

For Tom, the most impactful aspect of the Gies iMBA was its instant applicability.

“As I engaged in classes, I consistently sought to implement what I was learning in real-time at my job. I frequently found myself in class one day, and the next day utilizing my new knowledge,” he remarks.

Whether delving into statistics, marketing, or business strategy, the coursework never felt disconnected from reality. Instead, it was designed for immediate application within actual organizations, yielding tangible results. This direct correlation between learning and application kept him inspired and made the late nights and busy schedule worthwhile.

A Welcoming Community Fostered Through Online Connections

Even though it was entirely virtual, the iMBA cultivated a unique sense of community.

“They go above and beyond to ensure you feel like part of the Gies community, despite being an online student.”

From attentive support teams to in-person gatherings and alumni networks, every interaction reinforced the belief that online education didn’t equate to anonymity. He even took part in the well-known in-person event, iConverge, which he described as an incredible experience that allowed him to meet his peers in person.

“There are local alumni networks everywhere. I participated in several in the DC vicinity and met individuals at various sporting events; it was fantastic to connect with local peers. We even have a Teams channel for support and organizing meetups.”

This warm environment persisted throughout the program, allowing him to feel like more than merely a name in a database.

“Thousands of students have never set foot on campus. Nevertheless, I regard myself as an Illinois alum. I’ve got a little Illinois sign displayed next to my desk; it represents my collegiate sports team now. Honestly, my collection of orange apparel has reached an absurd level.”

Exceptional Support That Exceeds Expectations

One standout feature from day one was the quick response from the program’s staff.

“Every time I reached out for assistance, they replied almost instantly. It was astonishingly prompt.”

It wasn’t solely about addressing inquiries. Faculty and staff displayed deep involvement, enthusiasm, and attentiveness. The individuals behind the program, including leaders like Dean Brooke Elliott and Associate Dean Nerissa Brown, made a lasting impact.

He acknowledges experiencing impostor syndrome during his academic journey, particularly with Illinois recently being recognized as one of Forbes’ 2025 public Ivy League schools. Nevertheless, he encourages others to take the leap.
