Navigating the Intersection of Chemistry and Strategy: Ishpinder Kailey’s Journey Through an iMBA to Amplify Her Influence in STEM

When Ishpinder Kailey, a learner from Australia, contemplates her journey—from instructing physical chemistry in India, to managing global R&D teams in Canada, and now co-establishing her own advisory firm in Australia—her trajectory narrates a tale of steadfast tenacity, characterized by daring decisions, transformation, and a profound dedication to education and self-improvement.

Having a scientific background, Ishpinder has built an impressive academic portfolio. Many professionals might assume that her PhD in physical chemistry and two master’s degrees (one in organic synthesis and another in civil/environmental engineering) suffice; however, Ishpinder embraced the online iMBA program at the University of Illinois Gies College of Business as her third master’s degree.

She was keen to elevate her R&D expertise and contribute more significantly to business-oriented dialogues. With just one additional qualification, Ishpinder achieved her objective, skillfully merging her technical knowledge with business strategy, preparing herself to lead confidently in both science and entrepreneurship.

“I opted for an MBA as I aimed to grasp the strategic and financial choices behind the work I was already undertaking. I was knowledgeable about the industry—I simply required the tools to utilize that knowledge more effectively.”

Choosing Gies

Ishpinder was clear about her aspirations. She realized that to impact more broadly, a solid foundation in business was essential.

“I investigated flexible, top-notch programs. UIUC enjoys a robust academic standing, and the chance to access such a high-caliber MBA online via Coursera was a significant factor for me. The iMBA maintained an ideal balance of academic intensity, adaptability, cost-effectiveness, and worldwide recognition. The merit-based admission and practical orientation further confirmed that this program was designed for real-world influence.”

She enrolled in the iMBA and was thrilled with her decision. Acknowledging the program’s flexibility, reach, real-life application, and substantial support network, Ishpinder successfully navigated the challenges of managing parenthood alongside her full-time job.

When asked to describe her experience within the program, she shares, “It’s been transformative. The educators are outstanding, and the peer engagement from a diverse cohort is an invaluable resource. I especially appreciated the focus on collaboration and strategic ideation.”

Ishpinder graduated in August 2023 with a GPA of 3.94, becoming a member of Beta Gamma Sigma. But even post-graduation, she continued her educational journey.

“An MBA requires only 18 courses. Yet, my list was considerably longer—I’m still participating in courses on Coursera. I have a passion for learning.”

Tenacity and Achieved Success

Her ambition goes beyond professional goals—it’s anchored in a profound personal mission. After the passing of her husband, Ishpinder became a single parent to twin daughters. Instead of retreating, she faced the challenge head-on, discovering strength within her roles as both a mother and a leader, determined to demonstrate to her daughters the strength of resilience.

“I have a middle-class background in India. Whatever I achieve, I know it’s a result of my hard work. I wish for my daughters to remember that I put in the effort. I don’t want them to believe I had opportunities and didn’t seize them. Execution is my strength. Most individuals struggle with execution.”

In 2023, Ishpinder moved from Canada to Australia after being honored with an invitation to immigrate as a Distinguished Global Talent—an accolade received within a week of applying. Currently, she is applying her comprehensive knowledge in science, leadership, and business as the co-founder and principal consultant at Purple Spark Advisory, a consulting firm dedicated to aiding small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

“The iMBA enabled me to develop the strategic and operational skills necessary to establish and launch my own business. This program has undoubtedly empowered me to transform adversity into strength and motivated me to be a catalyst for change, not just in my life but also for the clients I aspire to assist through Purple Spark Advisory.”

Advancing Forward

When inquiring about the outcomes of her degree, Ishpinder states, “With this degree, I’ve attained the confidence, wisdom, and resources to co-establish my business and lead effectively.”

She is also dedicated to community service and is a proud member of the judging panel for the 2025 PMI PMO Global Awards, which honors exceptional PMOs globally for their excellence, innovation, and strategic influence. Additionally, she has joined a mentorship initiative and is currently guiding four emerging professionals—a role that Ishpinder finds profoundly fulfilling.

Offering final advice to other learners, whether they be fellow women in STEM or working mothers balancing busy lives, Ishpinder upholds what she imparts to her children:

“It’s never too late to make an attempt. If you aren’t trying, you’re already failing. I commenced my MBA in my early forties, and I consistently remind myself, it’s never too late to try.”

Her upcoming ambition? Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with her twin daughters. With her perseverance, humility, and unyielding commitment to learning, there’s no doubt: she will achieve that—and more.
