James Friend, affiliated with the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), has been appointed as the head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science in the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. His tenure will commence in 2026.

Friend oversees the medically advanced devices laboratory within the Center for Medical Devices at UCSD. He holds a professorship in both the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Jacobs School of Engineering and in the Department of Surgery at the School of Medicine. Additionally, he serves as the director of the Center for Medical Device Engineering and Biomechanics.
