Physicians who alternate their focus between patient care and laboratory exploration play an essential role in crafting groundbreaking methods for diagnosing and treating illnesses. The Dean’s Scholars initiative at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis was established in 2020 to assist early-career physicians who also engage in biomedical research, offering them financial aid and mentorship for up to two years, in addition to allocated lab time.

This program highlights WashU Medicine’s dedication to resolving a widespread deficit of physician-scientists. Although numerous physician-scientists possess both medical and doctoral qualifications, Dean’s Scholars seeks to enhance the research capabilities of those who only hold medical degrees.

The Division of Physician-Scientists has recently revealed its sixth group of scholars. The scholars are Quazim A. Alayo, MD; Whitney S. Brandt, MD; Roheena Panni, MD; and Ignacio A. Portales-Castillo, MD.
