Floyd E. Bloom, MD, an honorary emeritus member of the board at Washington University in St. Louis, passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. He was 88 years old.

Bloom held the title of professor emeritus in molecular and integrative neurosciences at the Scripps Research Institute located in La Jolla, California. He obtained his medical qualification from WashU Medicine in 1960.

Bloom made pivotal advancements in contemporary neuroscience and was a co-author of the influential textbook “The Biochemical Basis of Neuropharmacology,” initially released in 1970 and currently in its eighth edition. From 1995 to 2000, he acted as the editor-in-chief of Science.

In 1998, Bloom was elected to the WashU Board of Trustees and became an emeritus trustee in 2009. He participated in the Education Policy Committee (now referred to as the Academic Affairs Committee), serving as chair from 2003 to 2008. Additionally, he contributed to the defunct Research-Graduate Affairs Committee.

In 1980, Bloom was honored with a Distinguished Alumni Award from WashU and received an honorary degree in 1998. Furthermore, he was a frequent member of the medical school’s National Council for several years, including a period as chair. He also received WashU Medicine’s Second Century Award in 1997 and its Alumni Achievement Award in 2010.

Bloom is survived by his spouse, Jody Corey-Bloom, MD, PhD; his son, Evan Russell Bloom; his daughter, Fl’Nell Willis Kauweloa; his sister, Marcia Bloom Smith; two grandchildren, Jack and Hannah; and a great-grandchild, Audrey.
