Florida State University Leader Takes Helm of Florida Student Association

For the fourth occasion in five years, the leader of Florida State University’s Student Government Association (SGA) has been chosen to act as chair of the Florida Student Association (FSA).

Carson Dale, originally from Columbia, Missouri, took office as FSU’s 80th SGA president in April and was elected chair of the FSA in May. In his role as FSA chair, Dale has a say as a seated member on the Florida Board of Governors, which supervises the State University System of Florida (SUS). He was chosen to represent the student populations of all 12 public universities in Florida, catering to over 430,000 students.

Dale succeeds previous FSU SGA presidents Jack Hitchcock, Nimna Gabadage, and Nastassia “Tazzy” Janvier in these dual capacities.

“One of the aspects I’m most enthusiastic about with FSA is increasing student engagement to assist us in advocating for higher education and on issues that matter to students,” Dale expressed. “It’s a truly exceptional role to fulfill at the state level, serving on the Board of Trustees and Board of Governors at just 21 years old, representing all the students. I’m eager to learn from them and discover the secrets to their successes in life—it’s exhilarating.”

As the president of FSU’s SGA, Dale manages a budget of nearly $15.4 million and holds a voting position on FSU’s 13-member Board of Trustees. He will occupy both roles for a duration of one year while maintaining a full course load in both the fall and spring semesters.

His major is international affairs with a focus on public administration, and he is expected to graduate in May 2026.

Hailing from the Midwest with no prior connections to FSU, Dale mentioned he searched online and discovered FSU’s stunning campus and liked the idea of being in the state capital to follow a career in politics. He arrived in 2022, and during his freshman year established the Theta Xi chapter of Delta Sigma Phi. Dale is also part of the Presidential Scholars Program.

“We are exceptionally proud of Carson’s election as chair of the Florida Student Association and his leadership role on the Florida Board of Governors,” stated Andy Johnson, program director of Student Governance & Advocacy under the Division of Student Affairs. “He provides a thoughtful, collaborative approach to state advocacy, and we’re confident he’ll articulate the voice of Florida’s students with integrity and foresight.”

Dale expressed excitement about collaborating closely with FSA External Vice Chair Darsham Gonzalez (Florida Atlantic University) and FSA Internal Vice Chair Trista Bennett (University of West Florida).

“We have an excellent team of individuals,” said Dale. “I feel well-supported with their backing to accomplish great objectives.”

Dale’s long-term aspirations after graduation involve law school and lobbying, and he has a keen interest in political consulting. In his leisure time, Dale indicated he enjoys hiking, fishing, camping, and backpacking, as well as attending FSU football games.
