Florida State University’s College of Music and School of Theatre Unite for the Exciting ‘Preview @ FSU’ Series

Florida State University recently presented the second annual “Preview @ FSU” series, a distinctive partnership between the College of Music and the School of Theatre via the Music Theatre Program.

This year’s show, “Amelia and Me,” penned by Stacey Luftig and Phillip Palmer, narrates the tale of trailblazing aviator Amelia Earhart and her companionship with fellow flyer Jackie Cochran. Set in the year 1935, the musical delves into the occurrences preceding Amelia’s last flight and showcases the connection between these two extraordinary women.

The series represents a new works initiative that offers a venue for students to collaborate with professional writers and composers, granting them practical experience in the initial phases of musical creation.

“With this series, we strive to furnish our students with the chance to engage in a new musical during its preliminary phases,” remarked Alisa Hauser, assistant professor of music theatre and program head. “This experience is vital for their career readiness, as it reflects the work they will undertake in the field post-graduation. The series not only aids the students but also offers essential support to the writers and composers.”

Creating a new musical theatre production requires significant resources. This initiative allows students to enhance their abilities by being involved from beginning to end in the process.

“With this opportunity to come here, we provide rehearsal space, accompanists, student stage managers, and assistants,” Hauser stated. “It’s invaluable for the writers, and it is exactly what they seek.”

The performance took place at the Augusta Conradi Studio Theatre, providing an intimate atmosphere for this impactful narrative.
