This year, Florida State University Assistant Professor of Computational Linguistics Tom Juzek assisted in revealing why ChatGPT frequently uses certain terms. His recent study explores how the AI chatbot might be altering how individuals communicate.
In an examination of several of the nation’s trending technology podcasts, Juzek and his team analyzed the vocabulary employed in the podcasts before and after ChatGPT’s launch. They discovered a noteworthy transformation in the prevalence of AI-related jargon such as “exceed,” “detailed,” “tactically,” and “complex,” reflecting their heightened usage.
“The buzzwords experienced a notable change between the periods before and after Chat GPT’s release, while the synonyms remained relatively stable,” Juzek remarked. “The shift was considerable for such a brief duration pertaining to alterations in spoken language.”
Juzek is affiliated with FSU’s Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics within the College of Arts and Sciences. His research areas include the utilization of computational techniques for linguistic inquiries, currently concentrating on the characteristics of AI-produced language, its influence on human linguistic practices, and the factors that affect model behavior.
Investigations into how extensively AI is shaping language and conduct — for instance, how technology may be speeding up language evolution or serving as a catalyst for innovation — is still in early stages, Juzek noted.
“These models offer notable advantages and are genuinely beneficial tools, but lingering questions persist regarding unintended adverse effects on beliefs and behaviors,” he stated. “With AI, it is too early to assert causation. Our present findings are correlational. The next step involves thorough testing to determine what is genuinely changing and why.”
Juzek drew a comparison between AI and social platforms: both possess significant advantages alongside specific documented drawbacks over time.
“Social media has shown us that both outcomes can coexist, yet thorough causal research requires time,” he added.
