campus-declared-safe-after-false-alarm:-support-services-ready-for-community-assistance

At roughly 8:51 p.m. on August 29, the University of Georgia’s alert system was triggered after notifications about an armed assailant near UGA’s primary library. UGA Police reacted swiftly and discovered, after further examination, that the claim was fabricated.

The original false report exhibited similarities to other swatting occurrences across the nation. By leveraging campus surveillance cameras, along with the prompt actions from officers thoroughly searching the vicinity, UGA Police confirmed that there was no ongoing danger. An all-clear notification was subsequently communicated to the campus at 10:40 p.m.

We firmly denounce fictitious reports and swatting endeavors. Such misleading notifications instigate unnecessary anxiety and redirect essential emergency resources. Filing a false report is not a mere prank—it constitutes a perilous and unlawful offense.

The University of Georgia will persist in probing this incident in collaboration with state and federal law enforcement agencies, and we encourage anyone possessing information regarding this offense to report it without delay to law enforcement by reaching out to UGA Police at 706-542-5813.

Our foremost concern remains the safety and welfare of our campus community. Student Care and Outreach personnel are providing assistance to those present at the library and have additional counselors available to support students impacted by this distressing event. Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) is also accessible 24/7 and ready to aid students. UGA staff may utilize counseling services through the Employee Assistance Program available around the clock.
