Download Respondus Lockdown Browser Links To An External Site
Respondus Lockdown Browser is a dedicated browser that enables students to take quizzes in Canvas without being able to print, copy text, visit another URL, or access other applications on the machine. Students must install Respondus prior to beginning.
Students may use an iPad with instructor approval and install the RLDB Apple App.
1. Respondus Monitor
Your instructor should inform you in advance if Respondus Monitor will be necessary for the test(s). Additionally, the name of each assessment can provide clues – for instance if a particular assessment includes “(**Webcam**)” or “Requires Respondus LockDown Browser”, this indicates it may require Respondus LockDown Browser use.
If you own an iPad and are taking an online course that utilizes this application, download and install the appropriate version for it on your device before beginning class. Indiana University provides guides that will assist in this endeavor for both Windows and Mac computers.
Once the software is installed, you can proceed with your exam/quiz by following your instructor’s instructions. The tool will prevent you from accessing other browsers, applications or programs while taking the quiz/test and will record webcam and microphone footage so your instructor can review for suspicious activity afterward.
Respondus requires some initial configuration time before being fully compatible with its software. Therefore, to give yourself ample time for success during an exam session it is recommended that you set an alarm clock and gather any materials you will require prior to sitting the actual examination.
Students often express anxiety while using Respondus browser. Samantha Steffanus, who studies psychology and business administration at her second-year level, finds Respondus to be “very stressful at first because it feels very intrusive.
As part of their effort to reduce student stress and boost success, instructors should provide practice quizzes using Respondus Monitor before their first exam. This will give students time to familiarize themselves with both Respondus software and environment before taking an important test; additionally it gives them a chance to identify any problems and work with IU/Respondus support to resolve any potential problems before starting finals.
Respondus instructors should take note that its browser and monitor are incompatible with some screen reader accessibility programs; please see the Respondus Browser and Monitor accessibility knowledge base article to gain more knowledge. For students utilizing screen readers, LockDown Browser and Monitor for exams is advised.
Instructors can aid students by activating the iPad option in Respondus Browser and Monitor’s Advanced Settings when creating quizzes that require it, and students can utilize Respondus Adaptive Practice Quiz app on their devices to practice taking quizzes with Respondus software installed – once completed they can submit results to their course! For any further assistance or questions please reach out directly to an Indiana academic advisor for further support.
2. Respondus Lockdown Browser
NC State students are taking to social media to vent about professors requiring them to download lockdown browser programs for exams, which prevent users from accessing certain URLs or applications while running. Some have reported problems with these programs preventing accessing other URLs or applications while running, including being locked out of their computers or having difficulty shutting it off; others believe they have found them distracting and believe this may have negatively impacted their test scores.
Respondus Lockdown Browser is a standalone web browser that students must download and launch prior to taking an exam in which it is required. It does not automatically install through Blackboard; students must click a link in their exam instructions in order to begin downloading it. While downloading can be quick and simple, students will require a stable internet connection as well as meeting minimum system requirements for their computer – any programs used to connect directly to the internet such as instant messaging or email programs must also be closed out before beginning this process.
Once they have downloaded a browser, students can locate its icon on their desktop and double-click to launch it; laptop users should click the button in their exam instructions to begin loading it onto their machine. When finished installing their browser onto their machine, students should close all other programs or browsers before accessing Canvas through this browser to take their test.
ETS also provides Respondus Monitor as an extended version, suitable for lab/classroom environments to remotely proctor students taking online tests. Instructors should consider including exam policies and procedures regarding its use as part of their course syllabus or exam instructions; more information, including student guides and video demonstrations can be found at ETS Monitor Resource Site.
Students utilizing Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor as part of their testing requirements should take a practice quiz prior to their initial test in order to familiarize themselves with its interface and procedures and reduce anxiety before their exam day.
Respondus Lockdown Browser is compatible with assistive technologies such as VoiceOver on MacOS, making it accessible for students who use screen readers such as VoiceOver to take tests online using Respondus Browser exams. Instructors requiring that all their students take exams using Respondus should consider this accessibility option to ensure all students take tests consistently. It is also recommended that instructors review ETS’ wiki on Exam Instructions with Screen Readers for additional instructions.
3. Respondus Webcam
Respondus Webcam is an instructor monitoring tool, used in tandem with Respondus Lockdown Browser, that enables teachers to monitor students during online exams. Students cannot print or copy during an exam and their webcams will turn on during proctored tests in order to detect any suspicious activities; then instructors can review videos from during and after proctored tests to ensure it was administered appropriately.
The software offers instructors analytics for their tests that reveal whether students were distracted during examination. This data can help instructors to improve exams for future classes – for instance if a majority of students reported being distracted by social media while taking an exam, instructors may adapt questions to include more challenging or high-level material.
Once Respondus Monitor has been activated for a quiz, an option will appear under the Options menu of that exam. When selected, a warning will appear stating that taking this exam requires the Respondus Lockdown Browser app; other features could include mandating student photo ID and recording their environment during testing.
Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor require students to have a reliable internet connection of at least 3 Mbps in order to take an exam in an exam hall that is well-lit, quiet and free from distraction. If students experience issues with either their connection or computer hardware it is suggested they take a practice exam several days prior to taking the actual test in order to test whether everything is working as intended – giving IU and Respondus support time to assist if necessary.
Respondus Lockdown Browser quizzes require students to go through a Startup Sequence when they click Begin on them; during which, they may be required to take photos, record their environment or present valid ID documents before beginning a test. When they have finished this initial step, students are ready to start taking their test.
Instructors can enable a Webcam Review feature which records student activity during tests. This feature can help detect cheating activities not captured by Respondus software, such as repeated head movements indicating thoughts about another question or resource during the exam. Although not viewable live, after each exam it can be reviewed post test by both instructors and course assistants. Instructors can also enable additional troubleshooting tools as well as 24/7 LiveChat technical support for their students – these features can be learned more about by visiting their institution website or watching this demonstration from Cengage.
