Respondus Lockdown Browser is now available for Windows, Mac, and Chromebook (beta). Additionally, it works seamlessly with Respondus Monitor proctoring application.
Once a student takes an exam with extension activated, they are unable to leave it until their assessment has been submitted; otherwise an error will occur and must be completed before exiting.
Installing
Respondus Lockdown Browser was developed to ensure students have a safe and monitored learning experience. By blocking third-party apps like Google Chat and Zoom, Respondus makes it impossible for students to cheat during assessments; assignments cannot be accessed from other browsers either ensuring students only use Respondus for assessments; built-in tools allow administrators to monitor student progress as well as keep an eye on activity; plus educational institutes save over 300 million paper sheets annually by forgoing traditional tests!
Respondus LDB and Monitor Chromebook Extension has come out of beta phase and is now in its final form, ready for general release. This extension works with exams in Canvas, Blackboard Learn, D2L Brightspace and Schoology as well as supporting Respondus Monitor proctoring application – also supporting student-owned and managed Chromebooks.
To install this extension, navigate to your course in Canvas and click on the link that says “Respondus Lockdown Browser Required. This will bring up a page with Chrome Web Store from which you can select “Add to Chrome” to install. When complete, return back into your course and take the exam.
Once installed, LockDown Browser should display in the top-right corner of your screen to inform you that your instructor has enabled it for this assessment. This allows you to take it in full-screen mode with access to apps and websites restricted. Furthermore, printing or copying answers may be prevented as well as clicking “Minimize” or “Maximize”.
However, this extension has some restrictions. First and foremost, it only supports managed Chromebooks running Chrome OS; unfortunately it’s incompatible with Windows 10 S mode of the operating system; additionally calculator and spreadsheet features are currently unsupported; hopefully these limitations will be removed in a later version of this extension.
Enabling
Respondus Lockdown Browser for Chromebook is a Google extension that enables students to take quizzes and exams using Chrome browser. Available on Chrome Web Store, students should ensure they use the most up-to-date version before taking an exam or quiz – otherwise an older version could lead to an error that prevents them from starting it.
LockDown Browser will appear as soon as a student clicks an assessment link in Canvas and block access to other applications and websites until their assessment has been submitted for evaluation. This feature aims to reduce cheating or becoming distracted during assessments while creating an optimal test environment across devices used by all students taking tests.
LockDown Browser was specifically created to work seamlessly on Google Chromebooks and thus does not support other browsers such as Safari, Firefox and Opera as these use Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF), rendering content nearly identically.
If a student encounters difficulty using Respondus Lockdown Browser for Chromebook, they should begin by clearing away any offending cookies. Next, “pin” the extension to their toolbar and click it to access a utility that deletes specific groups of cookies. If that fails to solve their issues, contact ASU Experience Center immediately for assistance.
The ASU Experience Center has received reports from students who are unable to view Exam Feedback for Respondus Monitor enabled Quizzes after assessments have concluded in Canvas. This is a known bug with Respondus Lockdown Browser’s current version; an update will address it soon enough; in the meantime, however, students can view their Exam Feedback using a previous session of Respondus Lockdown Browser when starting up new Quizzes in Canvas.
Requirement
If your students are taking an exam that requires Respondus Lockdown Browser, they will first need to install its extension on their Chromebook. This is a quick process; simply click “get latest version” in Canvas New Quiz page and follow instructions. After installing, students can begin their exam.
Respondus Lockdown Browser mode is generally suitable for formative assignments, though some limitations should be kept in mind. Quizzes with required questions or multiple choice options cannot be completed using this mode; also text highlighting is unavailable and Quit Password feature does not support Chromebook edition of Lockdown Browser; furthermore calculator and spreadsheet features, extended keyboard functions with symbols and special characters are not supported either.
Respondus Lockdown Browser for Chromebook provides an effective solution to ensure student-owned devices remain safe during exams that require external proctoring tools. This extension works on Chromebooks web browser and is compatible with Blackboard Learn, D2L Brightspace, Moodle, Schoology as well as Respondus Monitor – an automated proctoring solution available both to students who own devices as well as those managed by schools.
If a student receives an error that indicates “Google Chrome OS can’t open this page”, they should close it and click the “get latest version” hyperlink before continuing their exam. This should allow them to take it without experiencing this error again and should give them enough time to pass without further issues arising; should any other difficulties arise they should contact their instructor for help.
If your instructor has enabled the Lockdown Browser and/or Monitor setting in their advanced settings for an exam, all PCs, Macs and iPads should be compatible with it. Troubleshooting
If you are having problems using Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor on your Chromebook, some of these steps could help solve them. For instance, closing any other applications on the device and placing it as close to your wireless router or internet access point as possible should help the issue. Furthermore, any antivirus software should also be disabled along with clearing away any cookies which could be causing issues on the computer itself. Canvas, Blackboard Learn, D2L Brightspace and Schoology use Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor as proctored assessments on quizzes and exams that use Respondus Lockdown Browser as proctoring solution. This solution is accessible both student-owned and managed devices; with student-owned Chromebooks needing only to download an extension from Chrome Web Store before login into Canvas to take tests that use Respondus Lockdown Browser.
Error Code 50 occurs if Respondus Lockdown Browser extension hasn’t been properly installed on a Chromebook, and needs to be properly updated with “get latest version. In order to take an exam using Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor enabled test. Close out and click “get latest version” link prior to proceeding with exam. Also it could happen due to running antivirus program; we advise students close any other applications while temporarily disable antivirus for taking Respondus Lockdown Browser test with Monitor enabled exam.
Other issues may arise, such as links not working correctly in a quiz. This usually results from issues related to configuration of the Internet Explorer browser components. Resetting your settings might help and give the quiz another go. In rare instances, students have reported their physical power button breaking during Respondus Lockdown Browser mode on Chromebooks – leaving them without an easy way of signing out or powering down their devices.
Some tests will require students to download the iPad Edition of Respondus Lockdown Browser from Apple App Store in order to take part. This special app requires Respondus lockdown features for proper operation; therefore it would be wise to contact your instructor before trying these quizzes on a Chromebook.
