How to download and install the Chromebook extension
Exams can be taken on Chromebooks without the need to download and install additional software; instead, the browser extension gives students access to tests in a continuous environment free of interruptions like screen capture software, instant messaging services, and other applications. Additionally, it prevents cheating by ensuring that students do not utilize other computers or tablets while taking tests.
The automated proctoring system used by more than 1,000 schools and universities, Respondus Monitor, is also supported. This solution is available for quizzes/exams given in Canvas, Blackboard Learn, D2L Brightspace, and Schoology LMSs. If their instructor has enabled Chromebook support, students will have an option shown when selecting the “Take a Quiz” link in that LMS if they log into one of the Rutgers-supported LMSs before starting the test from within it.
When a student opens the link, they are taken to the Google Chrome Web Store, where they are prompted to choose “Add to Chrome” in order to install this extension—just like they would when doing so for any other extension.
Following the installation of the extension, a new icon in their Chrome browser that resembles Respondus will show details about their LMS and exam as well as a warning that the LockDown browser will be utilized for the exam. Students should promptly close the error message that reads “Google Chrome OS can’t open this page” if it appears during an exam attempt before going back to their LMS and selecting Take a Quiz again.
Exams taken on a Chromebook are convenient for students, however there are several noteworthy limitations with the extension. Notably, the Chromebook extension does not allow the use of additional keyboard features, such as symbols and special characters, or the use of spreadsheets or calculators. To further prevent the necessity for camera use during exams, Respondus Lockdown Browser does not presently enable a “optional password field” that teachers may configure in the Monitor dashboard.
Getting started
This plugin enables you to use Respondus Lockdown Browser on a Chromebook if your instructor mandates it for Blackboard exams. It is intended to secure the testing environment and stop users from printing, copying, accessing other URLs, or printing while completing Blackboard quizzes.
You must visit the Chrome Web Store while signed into your school-issued Chromebook in order to utilize this tool. Install the Respondus Lockdown Browser extension after completing the process by selecting “Add to Chrome,” then go back to the Canvas course to take the necessary test.
Please be aware that, while still in beta, this extension only supports quizzes produced using quizzing software that is compatible with Respondus Lockdown Browser. Any attempt to take a test using another quizzing application will fail due to technical difficulties.
You can use the Respondus Lockdown Browser Chromebook extension to take tests in any of your Canvas courses after installing it. Simply access a test in Canvas, click “Take Quiz,” and a warning stating that Respondus Lockdown Browser is required will display. Follow the instructions to install this extension.
When you’re ready, click “Start the quiz,” then follow the prompts to launch Lockdown Browser and begin your exam. Please get in touch with your instructor immediately if any issues emerge.
Simply shut down your browser after your test is over to continue using your Chromebook as usual. However, keep in mind that after you close the browser, any test answers or other data stored to your Chromebook won’t be kept. If you want to come back later for another quiz session, you will need to reinstall and start from over. Simply store any essential files somewhere else or make use of Lockdown Browser’s integrated cookie management tool to stop this from happening again later.

Additionally, it is advised that they have the most recent version of RLDB installed; students can check this by clicking “i” in the toolbar and choosing “Check For Update.”
Its use is strongly advised during an RLDB exam even though it is not compulsory. A laptop with screen capture capabilities can be used to manage an assessor’s mouse and keyboard, record video of students taking tests, and offer visual evidence at the conclusion of an assessment. It can also be used by instructors for review.
It is advisable to close all programs other than RLDB, turn off any utilities, and reboot the computer if a student encounters problems when taking an exam on it. Additionally, ensure sure your antivirus program is turned off while you are taking examinations, as some older Chromebooks could need the battery disconnected to exit RLDB mode.
