Download Lockdown Browser For Canvas

Respondus Lockdown Browser is a secure browser designed to prevent students from printing, copying, or switching applications or websites during an exam. When your Canvas quiz requires Respondus for testing purposes, you’ll see a link for downloading this application.

Click the link to install your browser, and if prompted to close other applications, choose Yes.

Features

LockDown Browser creates a safe test-taking environment by prohibiting students from printing, copying, visiting another website/application, and closing a quiz before it has been submitted for grading. Furthermore, it blocks unauthorized individuals from watching students take an exam online. Instructors may require their students use LockDown Browser when taking quizzes in Canvas as well as set a “startup sequence” which includes webcam verification requirements to maintain academic integrity during non-proctored testing sessions.

If a course requires Respondus Lockdown Browser, students will receive a prompt that explains why and instructs them to download and install it prior to starting their quiz. This message can be seen either on the New Quiz page or within it; by clicking “Download,” Yale provides its unique LockDown Browser installation link which they must click in order to begin installation.

LockDown Browser’s installation file is a standard Windows or Mac installer, and can be found in your Applications folder once installed. Launch it by double-clicking its desktop shortcut or navigate directly to its folder in Applications. When asked, close all other programs unless one connects directly to the Internet; select Yes when asked whether to close any blocked ones (screen capture/instant messaging etc). Once your quiz begins, once clicked Submit Answers button cannot be closed out before all responses have been submitted by clicking Submit Answers button again.

LockDown Browser with Monitor is an effective way to combat cheating during exams, and especially online tests. However, it should not be seen as a replacement for proctored testing environments; whenever possible we recommend using an ethernet (wired) connection when taking tests with Respondus Monitor and LockDown Browser; intermittent lag or dropped/interrupted connections via wireless can cause issues with both browsers as well as answering submission.

Instructors can access information regarding their students’ exam sessions, including video recordings and data, via Canvas’ Monitor Reporting page. In addition, instructors can see a list of students who took the test as well as when it began and ended.

Installation

Respondus Lockdown Browser is a special browser developed specifically to add extra protection for tests and quizzes in Canvas. Used in combination with Respondus Monitor (which students may purchase through Canvas), this can prevent students from leaving an exam/quiz during its testing period and browsing other resources online during that period. Students can access it both personally and at University Testing Center locations. To set up exams using Lockdown Browser, navigate to your course page, find the exam you wish to set up using Respondus Lockdown Browser, then click Action Link (Chevron icon), followed by Settings (and).

If a course requires Lockdown Browser, the Quiz Summary page will contain a link for its download and installation. We highly suggest downloading and installing this software prior to taking any quizzes that require its use; downloading as a ZIP file takes only moments; installation takes minutes more; once installed you can take any quiz with it before uninstalling after completion of exam or test.

Before commencing an assessment that requires Respondus Lockdown Browser use, please make sure all other programs including Zoom or Skype systems have been closed off and that your computer meets minimum system requirements for the application to run properly. To test whether you can access your test or quiz in Respondus Lockdown Browser successfully, locate its icon on your desktop and double-click. For Mac users this browser can also be launched directly from Finder-Applications.

If you are teaching a course that requires Respondus Monitor with Lockdown Browser, it is imperative that a practice quiz with all of the same settings as expected on an exam be created and left available until course end – this will allow students to familiarize themselves with using Respondus and reduce any anxiety or confusion they might experience when first using Respondus for exam or quiz purposes.

Compatibility

LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor provide students taking exams under proctored conditions with a way to help prevent cheating by blocking access to certain programs or websites on their computers while the test is in session. While it won’t stop all attempts at cheating from happening, LockDown makes cheating much harder by restricting screen capture software, right-click functions and copy/paste activities from operating while it should. Compatible with Windows, Mac and Chromebook computers – and can even be directly accessed within Canvas!

Students will first install the browser by following a download link provided by their instructor or course syllabus, after which they can launch it by visiting a special course called Respondus LockDown Browser Practice Quiz on either their Canvas Dashboard or list of courses, where a quiz will appear for them to take and confirm whether their browser is operating smoothly.

If a student wishes to use the browser in a graded exam, they should follow these same steps, but when they click on an exam’s name they will be prompted to click “Enroll in this Quiz. If their instructor requires them to use webcam with browser then recording video will also be prompted for. Once taken they can return to “Respondus LockDown Monitor” course in Dashboard to review results as well as any recorded videos.

Lockdown Browser for quiz assessment prevents students from printing, browsing to any other URLs or using any applications while they’re logged into Canvas Quiz in their browser. Upon completion, they may choose to close it when prompted by the system; additionally, if other applications are running simultaneously with Lockdown Browser it will prompt users to close them automatically; it can even block programs like screen capture or instant messaging software if necessary – all free for use at USF!

Troubleshooting

Respondus Lockdown Browser software enables students to take tests in Canvas while restricting access to other programs and websites during testing sessions. Students must download and install this browser prior to taking an assessment requiring it; should any problems arise during this process they should contact their instructor for assistance.

Once a student clicks the download link, he or she will be asked to close all other programs running on his or her computer – including web browsers, instant messaging apps and screen capture programs – as these could potentially disrupt his or her test and require him or her to restart their browser in order to continue it. If not completed on time, testing could be disrupted and they would need to relaunch in order to resume it.

Once a student has installed the browser, he or she should close all other programs before starting up Respondus from either desktop (PC) or Applications folder (Mac). When respondingus opens, students are prompted to enter an Access Code; once submitted they should click “Install”. Lastly, once installed they can click “Start Exam” within Respondus application.

Respondus Lockdown Browser works with both Classic and New Quizzes in Canvas. Students need to follow directions within their courses in order to navigate to quizzes requiring Respondus Lockdown Browser before following prompts to log in and take their exam.

Students having trouble using the Respondus Lockdown Browser should reach out to either their instructor or IT Help Desk for assistance. Since it was installed via LTI integration within Canvas – SMU’s course management system – any installation or usage issues would likely only be relevant within our institution, and should therefore be resolved through IT Help Desk services.

Students taking exams should prefer using an Ethernet (wired) connection over wireless or mobile hotspot connections as these types are more susceptible to dropped connections due to Canvas server bandwidth demands, creating potential obstacles during exams where students must frequently reconnect to take tests.
