Georgia, commonly referred to as the Peach State, is renowned for its peaches, pecans, and peanuts. However, due to its temperate climate, the state also cultivates a range of unusual and exotic fruits.
In a monthly series inspired by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension publication “Minor Fruits and Nuts in Georgia” and curated by UGA Extension consumer horticulturist Bob Westerfield, we will showcase lesser-known fruits that can flourish in Georgia home gardens.
This month, we are highlighting kiwi. Although often regarded as exotic, kiwifruit can be cultivated in various regions across Georgia. Fuzzy kiwi, Actinidia chinensis or A. deliciosa, represents the variety you typically find in supermarkets and is the most prevalent. Resilient to winter temperatures as low as 10 degrees Fahrenheit, kiwis generally thrive in Plant Hardiness Zones 7-9.
