Georgia is renowned for its peaches, pecans, and peanuts, but due to its temperate climate, the state also nurtures a range of rare and exotic fruits and nuts.

In a series inspired by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension publication “Minor Fruits and Nuts in Georgia,” curated by UGA Extension consumer horticulturist Bob Westerfield, we will showcase lesser-known edibles that can flourish in Georgia home gardens.

This edition’s spotlight is on the black walnut, a sizable nut tree indigenous to Georgia and various regions of the eastern United States.
