The burgeoning and transformative domain of artificial intelligence holds worldwide consequences that necessitate global cooperation. To assist in closing the divide, Shuyuan Ho Metcalfe, an associate professor at the School of Information within Florida State University’s College of Communication and Information, embarked on research and a teaching role at the University of Bologna in Bologna, Italy, through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.

Fulbright U.S. Scholars consist of educators, researchers, administrators, and seasoned professionals engaged in teaching or research in partnership with overseas institutions. Fulbright Scholars partake in groundbreaking research and enhance their professional connections, frequently continuing collaborative projects initiated abroad and laying the foundation for establishing future alliances between institutions. Upon their return to their native countries, institutions, laboratories, and classrooms, they share their experiences and often evolve into enthusiastic advocates for international exchange, inviting foreign scholars to their campuses and motivating colleagues and students to explore opportunities abroad.

In addition to instructing at the University of Bologna, Metcalfe delved into research regarding the perception and traceability of anonymous communication for worldwide cyber defense.

“It’s going to involve an international initiative spanning two distinct continents to examine this intriguing challenge,” she remarked.

A significant highlight of Metcalfe’s journey was the numerous parallels she observed between the United States and Italy, especially among the student population. She noted a willingness to learn that transcended cultural boundaries.

“I believe that students were exceptionally prepared, and there is no disparity between the students in Italy and those in the United States,” Metcalfe stated. “Both groups are truly eager to acquire knowledge and eager to consider ways to tackle the issue.”

She discerned a comparable thirst for knowledge among faculty members as well.

“We are occupying the same intellectual space, contemplating the same challenges, which reassured me of the commonalities in our thinking across various borders,” she noted.
