One of my greatest concerns regarding VPNs is the level of trust users must invest in them, and the lack of transparency many exhibit about their ownership and the types of data they retain.
A recent report revealed that numerous commercial VPNs are often (covertly) owned by Chinese firms.
It could prove challenging for U.S. users to steer clear of the Chinese VPNs. The ownership of several appeared intentionally unclear, with many hiding their structure behind layers of offshore shell entities. TTP managed to ascertain the Chinese ownership of the 20 VPN applications available to Apple’s U.S. users by assembling corporate documents from across the globe. None of those applications distinctly revealed their Chinese ownership.
