Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s Advanced Placement exams will be taking place online for the first time ever, prompting increased concerns of cheating. An executive at The College Board, which administers AP exams, tweeted prior to tests starting that they have broken up a cheating ring and are investigating others.
Cheaters on an AP exam could find their scores cancelled, incur retest fees and possibly be banned from future testing sessions. Here are some strategies to help prevent cheating during an AP test.
1. Copying answers
College Board’s announcement that Advanced Placement exams would move online raised concerns about cheating. Students have an incentive to score all 4s and 5s on their AP exams so that they can qualify for more scholarships and secure entry to their dream colleges. Cheating is a major problem within education systems worldwide; when high schools transition lessons and tests to an online platform — particularly exams like Advanced Placement which have become standard across high school curricula around the globe — cheating becomes particularly hard to prevent.
Since AP exams are now online, students now have more ways than ever before to cheat at these exams. With private messaging apps being used as collaboration platforms between classmates, and even speaking directly with their teacher during an exam session; such attempts at cheating on an AP exam are dangerous as well as unprofessional; thankfully AP exam security measures exist to prevent students from cheating in this new online format of exams.
One of the key steps when taking an online AP exam is reviewing its syllabus and understanding its policies. Each AP test has various rules intended to preserve its integrity; failing to abide by these could result in your score being voided.
Practice is another essential component of online AP examination preparation. Furthermore, College Board announced it will add supervisors in every classroom during online AP exams this spring in order to monitor student activity.
Cheating on an Advanced Placement exam is both unethical and detrimental to a student’s future. To truly avoid repeating such behaviors in future exams, it’s essential that students reflect upon themselves honestly to determine why they committed cheating – this will enable them to develop more ethical, responsible habits.
3. Sharing answers
An online AP test differs from conventional multiple-choice exams in that its free response questions require deeper thought and analysis from students, making it harder for them to share answers or cheat by sharing. While students may be tempted to cheat on online Advanced Placement exams, most will avoid doing so because it is simply not worth taking the risk. An AP exam serves a useful purpose – to earn college credit that allows students to bypass intro courses and graduate early – focusing on this incentive can change our culture of cheating.
4. Using cheat sheets
Cheat sheets can be an effective way of studying for an online AP exam. Use them to help recall facts and formulas, as well as to test out your knowledge of the material. However, it’s important to use cheat sheets discreetly, disposing of them as soon as you finish taking your exam in case the teacher becomes suspicious of your unusual behavior and assume you are engaging in cheating.
