Canvas Respondus Lockdown Browser Download

Your instructor has chosen the Respondus Lockdown Browser as their quiz activity browser in Canvas. This browser prevents students from printing, copying, visiting another URL or using outside tools during assessments.

Your New or Classic Quiz will display a link to the Lockdown Browser Dashboard in Course Navigation. Follow these directions to download and install the browser, so that you may complete your quiz/test successfully.

How to Install

Respondus Lockdown Browser requires students taking an online test enabled by Respondus Lockdown Browser to download and install before beginning. Respondus Lockdown Browser is a custom browser which locks down testing environments within Canvas so students cannot print, copy, visit other URLs, or access applications while taking tests online. Respondus Lockdown Browser is available both for Windows and Macintosh computers.

Respondus Lockdown Browser can be downloaded by visiting your course site and clicking the quiz link. A prompt to download and install will then appear; select either “Yes” or “No”. After the application downloads, close its installer window before double-clicking its shortcut on your desktop (Mac users should launch “LockDown Browser” from Applications) to launch the program.

As soon as you first open Respondus Lockdown Browser, you will be asked to close any programs which are running that you do not wish to close. Furthermore, any programs configured for Respondus Lockdown Browser that were opened when taking a quiz that requires it must also be closed prior to taking part.

Establish a 0-point, one-question practice test in your course that utilizes Respondus so students can become acquainted with its tools before taking an official graded exam. This allows them to gain familiarity without risking grades or the integrity of test results.

To create an 0-point, 1-question practice test in Canvas, navigate to your course site and follow the steps outlined in NMSU’s How do I Manage Course Navigation Links guide. After adding it, make it visible for students in their Course Navigation list and enable “Require Respondus LockDown Browser” before commencing assessments – an option available both on desktop computers as well as mobile phones – this setting can also be applied across entire institutions or individual courses.

Getting Started

Your instructor may have created a quiz in Canvas which requires Respondus Lockdown Browser for students taking assessments, to prevent printing, copying, going to another URL or accessing applications during assessments. In such an instance, a link will be provided that downloads Respondus Lockdown Browser onto your computer; once this process has completed, you can begin your quiz.

Installation will depend on your type of operating system; for instance, on a Mac you will require two files from Yale’s download page: one being the.pkg file and another the.exe file (double-clicking both will launch them simultaneously); after selecting your institution and server the installation will ask you to choose them so it can launch Respondus Lockdown Browser.

Once you have launched Respondus Lockdown Browser, all other applications (other than those used to connect to the internet) must be closed before continuing with it. A message will also indicate any programs the browser needs to close before continuing; click “OK” if this applies or close them manually yourself.

When you’re ready to take the quiz, launch the browser by clicking on the icon resembling a world globe with a padlock and select your quiz from the course list and begin taking your exam. When your exams have concluded you can then exit LockDown Browser and return your computer back to its normal state.

If you are a student who uses assistive technologies, please review this PDF for important instructions on how to use Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor with your tools. Any students having difficulties should seek guidance from either their instructor or OIT Help Desk; additionally it is highly advised that you use another web browser when using Respondus Lockdown Browser.

Taking Quizzes

Once students have installed and successfully configured the Respondus Lockdown Browser, they are ready to take quizzes that require it in Canvas. To do so, they should follow the link in their course syllabus or announcement to the New Quiz activity and click it; once clicked, Respondus will open automatically with display of question set.

After taking an exam, students should close their browser before returning to the New Quiz activity and clicking Submit Answers – doing this will reveal feedback for that quiz, however this feedback will only appear if viewed during the same LockDown Browser session as when taking it.

Respondus Monitor can be enabled with the New Quiz activity for enhanced browser functionality by using webcam and video technology for online exams. Instructors can then review video recordings of test sessions as well as data such as when students leave or move away from video frames, or change computer locations during an exam session.

Teachers looking to use this feature in their class can enable it by clicking the Settings icon and choosing Options, followed by Enabling Respondus Monitor for this Quiz and saving. They may also set various other preferences such as whether or not students can close their browser window early and whether prompt them for reasons why they left early.

Students can download the LockDown Browser app ahead of time by following the steps in the ‘How do I Manage Course Navigation Links?’ guide. Once they have it installed, they can use their Pitt username and password to login into Canvas; alternatively they may connect using their personal email address or Google account and save their connection so they don’t have to reenter credentials each time they access it; using Pitt credentials will save responses for later grading purposes.

Taking Exams

Some instructors require students taking proctored tests in Canvas courses to use Respondus Lockdown Browser during proctored assessments. This tool prevents students from printing, copying, accessing external URLs or applications during assessments; if your quiz requires LockDown Browser you’ll see an explanation when clicking its link within Canvas as well as being given instructions on how to download its software if it hasn’t already.

Respondus Monitor for Lockdown Browser goes beyond simply blocking external resources to provide teachers with tools they need to verify student identity and prevent cheating during exams. You will be required to display a video showing your face when taking an exam requiring Respondus Monitor; other requirements set by your instructor (such as recording an overview of the examination environment) may also apply; all this data is recorded and stored by Respondus Monitor before being made available for review after an exam session by your instructor.

Respondus Lockdown Browser can only be used with Canvas exams and does not function on iPads. If taking a test requiring Respondus on an iPad, please enable it in Canvas before beginning the quiz – locate it among available apps, follow directions to install, then follow on-screen prompts to download to your device.

Before taking an exam in Canvas, both classic and new quizzes require you to launch LDB before beginning an exam session. Each session can only contain one exam at any one time so relaunching LDB may be necessary if more are desired. Unfortunately exam feedback isn’t compatible with this version of LDB for new Canvas quizzes; however it can still be seen for classic exams taken within the same session in which feedback was obtained.

If you are a faculty member looking to import a Respondus quiz into Canvas, its setting should automatically appear among the options for importing tools. The module contains instructions for downloading browser and how students will take their quizzes; additionally it can be added directly into Commons or course sites for easier distribution and assessment.
