This summer, six Caltech scholars will experience global adventures thanks to two travel grants sponsored by Caltech alumni. The Amasa Bishop Summer Study Abroad Fellowship will support Camilla Power, a third-year chemistry student, as she engages in a French intensive program through Alliance Française in Nice Côte d’Azur, France. Additionally, Areeg Al-Dayni, a first-year bioengineering student, will also benefit while studying Spanish language and liberal arts through CEA CAPA Education Abroad in Granada, Spain.
The Bishop Fellowship is named in honor of Amasa Bishop (BS ’43) and was financed by his family. Bishop pursued physics at Caltech and subsequently worked in atomic energy as the chief of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission’s Controlled Thermonuclear Branch and representative to the European branch of the Atomic Energy Commission. He emphasized the significance of understanding the challenges and cultures of different nations for scientists and engineers.
The SanPietro Summer Travel Prize will assist Miles Jones, a fourth-year mechanical engineering student, as he travels to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland; Otis Otieno, a second-year applied and computational mathematics student, as he journeys to New Zealand; and Ryan Wong and Edward Speer, both fourth-year computer science students, as they explore Japan.
“Travel holds significant meaning for me, particularly in today’s climate, as it expands my understanding of other lands and cultures,” Jones shares. “I aim to acquire a richer comprehension of the foreign nations and societies I will visit while also enjoying a trip to places I have longed to explore for years.”
Speer mentions that his experience in the diverse community at Caltech motivated him to visit Japan this summer. “At Caltech, I have had the chance to collaborate with peers from Europe, India, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and various regions of the United States, gaining insights into different cultures and experiences. The SanPietro Travel Prize will enable me to discover Japan not just as a visitor, but as a learner, immersing myself in its language, history, and everyday life. I’m particularly eager to witness Japan’s dynamic blend of tradition and innovation firsthand and to relay those insights back to my work and community at Caltech.”
The SanPietro prize was established by Craig SanPietro (BS ’69), who wanted to provide opportunities to Caltech students similar to those he enjoyed during his travels to over 50 countries. He hopes that these funds will immerse Caltech students “in unique cultural and physical circumstances that challenge you and invigorate your spirit.”
Bon voyage to Caltech’s summer explorers!
