Daniel Brown, associate professor in the Risk Management and Insurance Program at the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business, has been selected as the 2025 recipient of UGA’s Lee Anne Seawell Faculty Recognition Award.

Instructors and staff members who earn this accolade, awarded each year by the UGA Career Center, are chosen based on feedback from the Career Center’s annual Career Outcomes Survey. This survey provided the Class of 2024 a chance to highlight a faculty or staff individual who significantly impacted their professional development.

Brown completed his undergraduate studies in finance at UGA and obtained his master’s degree in business administration from Georgia College and State University. After dedicating 15 years to the insurance sector, he shifted his focus to academia. Now boasting seven years of experience as a UGA educator, Brown instructs four courses every fall and spring term. He actively champions students’ career aspirations and routinely goes above and beyond to assist them on their professional paths.

“I consider myself fortunate to have a job that I am passionate about — a ‘get to’ job. I look forward to going to work daily, and I aim to assist students in discovering their own ‘get to’ jobs,” Brown expressed. “To achieve this, I prioritize building connections with students. I share numerous personal anecdotes in class, encompassing both successes and setbacks, and I hope this allows them to see me as someone they can relate to. Ultimately, I aspire to aid them in finding careers that transform into their own ‘get to’ jobs.”

In recent years, Brown has played a key role in the Risk Management and Insurance Program by facilitating its own career fair. The RMI Careers Day unites over 80 employers with more than 400 RMI students, providing a venue for employers to interact with and interview students pursuing both internship roles and permanent job openings.

Brown attributes a significant portion of his teaching methodology to the educators who served as inspirations during his studies at UGA. He fondly recalls Kevin Ellis, whose engaging demeanor and valuable guidance have left a lasting impression, as well as Mark Huber, 2022 Seawell Award honoree whose teachings still influence Brown’s current career navigation strategies.

“I admired them, and a part of me hoped to emulate them, which I believe greatly contributed to my journey to this role,” Brown stated. “I’ve endeavored to reflect their teaching approach in my classroom because it resonated with me during my time as a student. Student feedback indicates it successfully strikes a chord with them as well.”

The late Lee Anne Seawell established this faculty recognition award, which has been given out annually since 2017. Seawell began her journey at UGA in 1947 as one of the university’s pioneering female administrators, serving in career services and student financial aid until she retired in 1987.

“Since joining the UGA faculty, one of my main objectives has been to connect with students,” Brown mentioned. “This award acknowledges the importance of engaging with students and assisting them in discovering their career paths. I am incredibly grateful to receive this award and thankful to Lee Anne Seawell for establishing it.”
