Bailey Marie Latchford, a third-year student at Florida State University, is pursuing a combined degree in social work and criminal justice. Her path to FSU was shaped by her three siblings who attended the institution prior to her, the scale of the campus, and the numerous opportunities it affords.
Latchford is affiliated with the Seminole Tribe of Florida and hails from the Hollywood Reservation, one of the tribal reservations managed by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Bailey has been engaged in singing since childhood, and during her tenure at FSU, she has performed the National Anthem for men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, and softball during the Seminole Heritage games hosted by the university.
Her dedication to community involvement is also remarkable. Latchford actively participates in several organizations at FSU, including the Big Sister Little Sister mentorship program and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
How do you believe your past experiences at FSU will influence your professional journey?
During my time at FSU, I have been presented with numerous chances to connect with individuals from various facets of life. The connections I’ve forged and the insights I’ve acquired will remain with me indefinitely. The openness and welcoming spirit on campus have enhanced my ability to communicate and bond with people on different journeys in life. I’ve also had the opportunity to meet potential future employers and establish relationships in diverse fields that I anticipate will be useful in my future role as a social worker.
What does it signify to represent your heritage as Miss Florida Seminole?
It holds immense significance for me to not only represent the tribe and my Seminole heritage as a student but now also as Miss Florida Seminole. This title transcends myself; it honors my ancestors who lacked the same opportunities I have, and it’s for my descendants, so they don’t encounter the same obstacles I faced, and for the youth of the Seminole Tribe to continue pursuing excellence and demonstrating that we are present. I carry great pride and responsibility with the crown and my culture, as it’s larger than my individual self. I aim to reflect my heritage in every potential way, whether it’s through traditional attire or public speaking, with the goal of educating wherever and whenever possible about the strength and perseverance of my ancestors, who valiantly fought for their right to exist as Seminole people, thus shaping who we are today.
What are your aspirations after graduation?
I intend to pursue my master’s in social work and aim to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. My objective is to work with Indigenous communities across the nation and gain insights into the various Indigenous cultures around the globe. Though I have not made a definitive choice about where to go, I eagerly anticipate the path ahead in my career!
What roles do you hold in both the NAACP and Big Sister Little Sister (BSLS)?
As a general member of the NAACP, I can remain informed about ongoing social issues, particularly those concerning our government. As a future social worker, it’s essential for me to stay updated with governmental events related to policy, as I strive to be a competent advocate in my forthcoming career. The NAACP also allows me to be surrounded by like-minded individuals who inspire me to become the best version of myself, just as I do for them. I’ve forged incredible friendships within the NAACP and continue to learn tremendously. Within BSLS, I’ve cultivated strong connections and nurtured a sense of sisterhood during my time at FSU. From knowing no one to being the membership chair for the 2025-2026 academic year, this organization has enabled me to come out of my shell and help guide incoming freshmen and transfers, providing them the wonderful feeling of sisterhood that BSLS has offered me. I connect with these remarkable girls on so many levels and learn something new each day on a variety of topics.
