The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann, delivers one of the most impactful musical compositions ever created to the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center’s Hodgson Concert Hall on Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m.

This UGA Presents program concludes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125, “Choral,” an uplifting tribute to humanity and joy.

Joining Stutzmann and the orchestra are the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus, directed by Norman Mackenzie, along with a remarkable quartet of soloists: soprano Christina Nilsson, mezzo-soprano Rhianna Cockrell, tenor Siyabonga Maqungo, and baritone Leon Košavić.

Prior to Beethoven’s iconic Ninth, the orchestra delves into the divine and the ethereal with two pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach. The evening commences with the Concerto in D Minor for Two Violins and String Orchestra, BWV 1043, featuring David Coucheron, ASO concertmaster, and Lauren Roth, acting associate concertmaster. The program proceeds with Bach’s Cantata No. 56, “Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen,” a contemplative piece that compares life to a journey across the ocean, sung by baritone Leon Košavić and the ASO Chorus.

Following intermission, the musicians shift focus to Beethoven’s Ninth. Its concluding movement, a musical interpretation of Friedrich Schiller’s poem “Ode to Joy,” remains one of the most electrifying moments in all of artistic expression.

For over thirty years, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has been a beloved staple at the University of Georgia, frequently performing at the Performing Arts Center since its lavish inauguration in 1996. The orchestra’s visits to Athens present audiences with the chance to experience one of the nation’s premier ensembles in the acoustically exceptional Hodgson Concert Hall, perpetuating a legacy of musical brilliance that connects Georgia’s flagship university with its prestigious orchestra.

This event is made possible by Thomas Wilfong, Van and Libby V. Morris, Jinx and Gordhan Patel, Malcolm and Priscilla Sumner, and Betsy and Blair Dorminey.
