atlanta-symphony-orchestra-returns-to-athens-april-13-with-beloved-masterworks

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performs at Hodgson Concert Hall on April 13 at 3 p.m., featuring two of the most cherished compositions in classical music: Tchaikovsky’s beautifully rich First Piano Concerto and Ravel’s groundbreaking “La valse.”

The piano soloist for the event is Anna Geniushene, a silver medalist from the Van Cliburn competition, with ASO Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann taking the helm as conductor.

Stutzmann, who has made noteworthy debuts with distinguished ensembles such as the Czech Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, as well as her conducting initiation at the Musikverein with the Wiener Symphoniker, has a current season that also features returns to the New York Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. In June, she is set to revisit Bruxelles La Monnaie to direct “Carmen.”

Having signed an exclusive recording deal with Warner Classics/Erato, her inaugural symphonic recording for the label of Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 and “American Suite” alongside the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra was released in August 2024. As one of the most respected contraltos today, she boasts over 80 recordings and has garnered the highest accolades, including being named “Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur,” France’s utmost distinction, and “Commandeur dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” by the French government.

Geniushene’s vibrant, intricate, and potent interpretations were pivotal to her involvement in the 2022 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, where she succeeded in winning the prestigious silver medal. Following this, she received widespread recognition — Musical America honored her as Young Artist of the Month in July 2022, while Pianist magazine showcased her on the cover in June 2023 — which led to invitations from esteemed institutions.

Audience members are invited to a pre-performance discussion led by Arielle Crumly in Ramsey Concert Hall from 2:15 to 2:45 p.m.

This event is made possible by support from the Kleiner Foundation.
