Highlighted Podcast: “Ways of Knowing” (College of Arts & Sciences)

This podcast showcases how humanities studies can mirror everyday experiences. In collaboration with The World According to Sound and the University of Washington, each episode features a faculty member from the UW College of Arts & Sciences, discussing inspiring work and recommending resources for further exploration.

This student-led Improvised Music Project offers performances by a changing lineup of UW jazz studies students, faculty, and special guests every first and third Wednesday from 6 to 10 pm, at Vermillion Art Gallery and Bar (1508 11th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122).

OPENING EXHIBIT | Woven in Wool: Resilience in Coast Salish Weaving – Saturday, September 13, 2025 to Sunday, August 30, 2026

Woven in Wool: Resilience in Coast Salish Weaving displays both historical and contemporary woven artifacts — from blankets and tunics to hoods and skirts. Traverse the seasonal cycle of weaving, beginning with material gathering and wool spinning to dyeing with natural substances and creating intricate designs. Along the way, interact with weavers and gain knowledge of the profound cultural and scientific understanding embedded in every thread.

OPENING EXHIBIT | Spirit House – Saturday, July 26, 2025 to Sunday, January 11, 2026Creative Currents: A Summer 2025 Recap

The exhibition features contemporary artists who connect fragmented familial stories influenced by war, migration, and generational trauma to overarching global narratives, crafting new stories that reinterpret their challenging beginnings. Guided by these artists, Spirit House encourages you to connect with your ancestors, contemplate significant memories, and traverse time and space.

CLOSING EXHIBIT | Jason Faught: Sanctuary – Final day Sunday, July 27

This showcase emphasizes Sanctuary (2017), a large tapestry commissioned by Western Bridge for Seattle’s Saint Mark’s Cathedral and now part of the Henry’s collection.

CLOSING EXHIBIT | Chloë Bass: Soft Services – Final days, August 2025

For Bass’s initiative, organized and commissioned by the Henry, a sequence of fourteen stone benches is installed throughout

Seattle’s Volunteer Park features two additional sculptures positioned outside the Henry itself. Every bench is adorned with its unique inscription and an image applied in light-sensitive pigment. This initiative explores themes of growth and untamed nature, the regulations we enforce to manage human life, social hierarchy and closeness, as well as stones symbolizing memorials, boundaries, and legislative indicators.

CLOSING EXHIBIT | Tala Madani: Be flat – Last day Sunday, August 25

Be flat marks Tala Madani’s inaugural solo showcase in Washington State, showcasing both recent and newly commissioned pieces that investigate the impact of symbols, language, and mark-making on power relations and personal agency.

CLOSING EXHIBIT | Carmen Winant: Passing On – Last day Thursday, September 25

This targeted exhibit spotlights works from Passing On (2022), a collection of collaged newspaper obituaries honoring prominent feminist activists and organizers. The snippets, presented alongside Winant’s handwritten notes, contemplate a lineage of non-genetic inheritance and how language influences memory and history.

Creative Currents: A Summer 2025 Recap

Ravenstail weaving techniques have made a comeback among the Northwest Coastal Peoples, yet our historical robes remain housed in museum collections. Mentor weaver Ksm Lx’sg̱a̱n, Ruth Hallows, and apprentice weaver Jay Hallows collaborate with over twenty weavers to symbolically revive historical Ravenstail robes by reweaving and returning them home for ceremonial use.

Creative Currents: A Summer 2025 Recap

BLUEs.Weave will showcase two interconnected demonstrations of exploratory Black American music commemorating the Juneteenth holiday.

The first demonstration will highlight original musical works, lyrics, and improvisations reflecting on the various forms and aesthetics of celebration throughout the sonic heritage of Black American music. The second will be a live, collaborative composition session where BLUEs.Weave unveils their compositional process and techniques, culminating in a piece and performance that honors the significance of Juneteenth and Black liberation.
