Associate Professor Chandler Ahrens has been appointed chair of graduate architecture at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. This new position commenced on July 1.

Since becoming a part of the Sam Fox School as an assistant professor in 2012, Ahrens has instructed a range of courses; presided over and participated in numerous committees, including the Steedman Fellowship committee; and collaborated closely with the school’s Office for Socially Engaged Practice.
Before joining WashU, Ahrens worked as an architect at various firms, spending nine years at Morphosis Architects, where he managed significant projects including the New Academic Building at Cooper Union in New York, the U.S. Embassy in London, and the Phare Tower in Paris. In 2004, he co-founded Open Source Architecture, an award-winning design research organization with locations in St. Louis, Los Angeles, and Tel Aviv. In 2024, he co-established another firm, AVV A, alongside colleagues Constance Vale and Kelley Van Dyck Murphy from the Sam Fox School.
Ahrens holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the Savannah College of Art and Design and a master’s in architecture from the University of California, Los Angeles. He takes over from Mónica Rivera, who held the position from 2018 to 2025 before transitioning to the faculty at Rice University.
