A Letter from President McCullough on the Grand Opening of the Student Union

Dear FSU Community,

In light of the devastating occurrences on April 17, I find myself contemplating that dreadful day and the needs of our collective.

Our grief is profound, yet amidst the sadness, we have observed extraordinary unity and assistance from students, faculty, staff, and supporters. This spirit of togetherness showcases the indomitable essence of Florida State University.

Following thorough deliberation and listening to our students, we have made the choice to reopen the Student Union from 3 to 5 p.m. on Monday, April 28. We invite you to join us for a period of reflection at 3 p.m. before the Union’s opening. This was not an uncomplicated decision, and I recognize that some may disagree with it.

I have engaged with numerous students from all year groups. Our seniors, in particular, conveyed a strong wish for the Union to be accessible during their final week at Florida State University.

We recognize the significance of the Student Union as a center for connection, support, education, and development. It is essential that we continue to provide students with the services, opportunities, and communal areas that nurture their growth and wellness. We aim to offer the greatest variety of options for our community to choose when they wish to be in the Student Union.

Opening will be carried out with the highest respect and consideration for those affected. No staff or volunteers will be obligated to attend or return to the Student Union until they feel prepared.

Further details for employees working in the Student Union will be shared soon. We are dedicated to offering a space that honors individuals, balancing the needs of the majority with an awareness of personal experiences.

Those prepared to return are welcomed to join us in the Student Union on Monday. Those who don’t feel at ease can come back when they are set. Each person will heal at their own rhythm and may have different feelings about being in that environment. We will announce extended hours of operation later this week.

We are taking into account the requirements of the entire student body and campus community as we advance with this step.

United, we will carry on reflecting, healing, and progressing. We represent Florida State.

Sincerely,

Richard McCullough
FSU President
