Introducing Grace, a prior fashion designer who’s courageously forging a new route toward a career in computer science. Motivated by the legacy of mathematician Amalie Emmy Noether—and eager to conquer her apprehension regarding math to be an exemplary figure for her daughter—she commenced her online learning journey. Juggling her education with family obligations was challenging, especially as she was undergoing breast cancer treatment simultaneously. However, she triumphed, and Grace is currently enrolled in the University of London’s Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program. She’s enthusiastic about the myriad of opportunities that computer science will present to her. Discover her story, motivations, and aspirations as she shares her experiences below.
Coming from an artistic and design background, enrolling in the University of London’s Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program was a significant step for me. Additionally, I was an older student embarking on an undergraduate journey after spending over a decade in the professional realm. Nevertheless, I was resolute in my decision to embrace this challenge. I was already accustomed to the Coursera platform, which I found user-friendly, and I valued the structure of the lectures and the well-defined deadlines. Given my positive past experiences, I believed it would be smoother to pursue my goals through an online degree program via Coursera.

Being a positive role model for my children, especially my daughter, was crucial for me. I wanted her to witness her mother confronting a challenging situation and persevering. I aimed for her to understand that although gaining knowledge in scientific fields may be tough, it is also rewarding and attainable.
For over a decade, I worked as a fashion designer. While art and design came naturally to me, science did not. I decided it was essential for me to confront an old struggle I had with mathematics. You could say I had a math-related anxiety. I began taking math classes gradually and put in tremendous effort to enhance my mathematical knowledge. During those early years, I had a family to care for while undergoing breast cancer treatment. There were challenging moments, but the thrill of solving a math problem brought joy. Mastering new and complex mathematical and programming concepts filled me with pride and strength. I take great pride in how far I have progressed in science. I started from scratch. If I can do it, anyone can.
A notable inspiration for me is the mathematician Amalie Emmy Noether (1882-1935). She authored numerous papers on David Hilbert’s research surrounding fields, rational functions, invariants, and finite groups. This body of work resulted in her groundbreaking contributions to abstract algebra. Throughout her career, she faced many rejections, including from some faculty at the University of Göttingen. Despite the obstacles, she remained dedicated to her passion. I often reflect: “What an extraordinary intellect she possessed, and what an incredible spirit to pursue her interests in an era when women were discouraged or prohibited from studying the sciences. If she could confront such challenges, why shouldn’t I?”
Noether’s narrative instills hope in me and serves as motivation to persevere in my computer science studies. Inspiration and support are often needed by everyone:
Work diligently, don’t surrender. I, too, was intimidated by math, but consistent practice and commitment have led me to my current position. To any woman aspiring to enter any STEM field, don’t accept defeat!
Though I’m just beginning my computer science education, I hope to deepen my understanding and refine my skills. Up to this point, I have learned to program a game using Javascript. I had no prior programming experience and thoroughly enjoyed the course and its learning structure. My daughter is exploring Scratch, a straightforward programming language aimed at children and novices, and thanks to my coursework, I’ve been able to assist her as she continues to progress. I cherish the opportunity to study alongside my daughter and witness our growth together.
Delving into computer science will unveil a brand new world for me. For the past few years, I’ve been a stay-at-home mom, focusing on my family, and I am eager to re-enter a career that challenges me and offers a fresh viewpoint. I dream of applying my newly acquired programming abilities in the realms of art or design—working in animation would fulfill my aspirations!
Fun fact about me: I hail from a quaint village in Cork (Rathcormac), Ireland, and my initial background lies in Fashion Design and Art. I have been residing in the United States for the last 27 years, with work experiences in Dublin, London, and New York. I enjoy cooking and adding my artistic flair to my food presentations. Cooking, photography, and designing and sewing my own clothing are among my favored pastimes!
