Clint Waltz, turfgrass extension expert with UGA Cooperative Extension, conversed with House Beautiful regarding methods to eliminate crabgrass.
“Crabgrass is a summer annual grassy nuisance that showcases a different texture and hue compared to preferred grasses, thereby impacting your lawn’s visual appeal,” Waltz remarked. “Biologically speaking, it vies with the desirable grasses for sunlight, water, space, and nutrients.”
The most effective strategy is to prevent crabgrass from taking root.
“Controlling crabgrass is straightforward with a pre-emergent herbicide,” Waltz stated. “It must be applied before the weed seeds germinate for optimal effectiveness.”
Applying a post-emergent herbicide to individual plants can also be effective once they begin to sprout.
For maintaining optimal lawn health, Waltz recommends mowing consistently at the appropriate height, irrigating thoroughly but infrequently, and monitoring for diseases and pests.
