FSU Sees Significant Growth in National Academy Faculty Membership

Following recent appointments within the College of Medicine and the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy, Florida State University has increased its faculty count of members belonging to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, a distinguished organization that connects renowned researchers nationwide.

“Florida State University is a prominent research institution and an exceptional environment for fostering an academic career,” stated FSU President Richard McCullough. “Our success in attracting these distinguished faculty members underscores our dedication to that mission.”

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, or NASEM, are private, nonprofit entities that offer expert guidance on some of the most urgent issues confronting the nation and the globe. Their endeavors help design effective policies, shape public sentiment, and advance the fields of science, engineering, and medicine.

The university currently boasts 12 NASEM members among its faculty, up from six in 2024.

“These National Academy scholars are eager to join FSU because the administration, faculty, and students appreciate their contributions and the chance to collaborate,” remarked Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Jim Clark.

This year, FSU welcomed National Academy members A. Stewart Fotheringham to the Department of Geography, Regan Bailey to the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Social Medicine, and Patrick Stover to the Department of Biomedical Sciences.

Fotheringham holds the position of Krafft Professor of Spatial Data Science and directs the Spatial Data Science Center. His research centers on the examination of spatial data sets through statistical, mathematical, and computational techniques, which he applies to topics including health data, crime trends, migration, and beyond.

Bailey serves as a professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Social Medicine and is co-director of the Institute for Connecting Nutrition and Health. As a nutritional epidemiologist, her research aims to enhance health through nutrition throughout various life stages. Her research program implements best practices for evaluating nutritional status, improving dietary assessment, and chronic disease risks using a life course approach.

Stover is a professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and co-director of the Institute for Connecting Nutrition and Health. He is recognized for his research on folate metabolism and its vital role in human health. His findings have illuminated how folate, a B-vitamin, influences essential biological processes such as DNA synthesis, repair, and methylation, and have demonstrated the severe health implications of folate deficiencies, including neuropathies, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.

The number of National Academy members within the faculty significantly impacts institutional membership in the Association of American Universities, or AAU, a consortium of leading research universities.
