FSU Welcomes Florida Universities for a Summit on Hazing Prevention

Florida State University hosted over 90 professionals in student affairs from all 12 institutions within the State University System (SUS) on June 12–13 for the SUS Hazing Prevention Summit—marking FSU’s inaugural time leading the event.

The summit emphasized applying organizational change frameworks to avert hazing and foster safer campus settings. Participants investigated techniques, exchanged best practices, and collaborated on solutions that span multiple campuses.

“It is an incredible honor and privilege to welcome other SUS institutions to Florida State University,” remarked Amy Hecht, FSU’s vice president for Student Affairs. “Following the enactment of the Stop Campus Hazing Act, this summit is crucial. Through collaborative discussions, we can collectively challenge existing norms and explore how we may nurture environments that necessitate a proactive stance in addressing and preventing hazing within our campuses.”

FSU collaborated with the Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Drug Misuse Prevention and Recovery (HECAOD), a scholarly center at Ohio State University, to curate the summit’s content. HECAOD offers training, resources, and support to higher education professionals nationwide who tackle collegiate substance misuse.

“Through collaborative dialogue, we can collectively challenge the status quo and ask how we might cultivate environments where a proactive approach is needed to address and prevent hazing on our campuses.”

Participants included representatives from various campus sectors, such as fraternity and sorority affairs, campus recreation, student engagement, student conduct, and health promotion services. The institute-style summit, directed by FSU’s Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life Freddy Juarez and HECAOD’s Outreach and Engagement Manager Logan Davis, concentrated on student profiles, upstream prevention techniques, and assessing their current campus frameworks to combat hazing.

“The summit provided our colleagues throughout the SUS a chance to dedicate meaningful time towards developing a strategy to navigate the intricacies of hazing prevention,” Juarez expressed. “This time was enriched by the collective creativity present among the SUS professionals. Together, we can establish safer communities that prioritize student success.”

In small groups, participants departed with shared insights and actionable ideas on mitigating campus hazing.
