Twenty-two students from Florida State University will explore the world this summer via the esteemed Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program.

Endorsed by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Gilman Scholarship provides students with the chance to study or intern abroad, equipping them with essential skills vital to U.S. national security and economic growth while getting them ready for a globalized environment. To qualify for the Gilman Program, candidates must maintain a solid academic performance and intend to engage in a credit-earning opportunity. Furthermore, candidates must be recipients of a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or provide verification that they will obtain a Pell Grant during their study abroad program or internship period.

Since its establishment, FSU has produced 187 Gilman Scholars who have traveled to 43 distinct countries, securing over $700,000 for their global endeavors. Through this accolade, Florida State students join the esteemed Gilman alumni network that spans worldwide.

“Our 2025 cohort is truly a remarkable assembly of young scholars,” remarked Jesse Wieland, associate director of the Office of National Fellowships. “These individuals embraced the most challenging application cycles we’ve seen but turned that competition into motivation for crafting persuasive application materials. Our Gilman scholars represent a microcosm of the innovation and academic excellence within our student community; they each discovered perfect study programs that resonate with their majors or career goals in collaboration with FSU faculty and staff.”

The Institute of International Education (IIE) has overseen the program since its launch in 2001, with over 28,000 students receiving awards. The IIE recorded an unprecedented 17,000 applications during the 2024-2025 academic year, and FSU recipients are among those chosen to undertake an international experience this summer.

Nine out of the 22 awardees will utilize the Gilman Scholarship to engage in study abroad programs facilitated by FSU International Programs. Shinaika Hiller, Jean-Luc Cruz, and Alyia Fitzgerald are set to partake in the “Social Work & International Affairs: Human Rights” initiative in Prague, Czech Republic this summer.
