As temperatures continue to rise and the days grow longer, residents of St. Louis are eager to venture outdoors. As part of its “In St. Louis, For St. Louis” pledge, WashU is backing various organizations dedicated to outdoor activities.
In recent months, WashU has made financial contributions to two significant initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for all St. Louisans. The first investment was in Great Rivers Greenway’s Brickline Greenway project, which will consist of over a dozen miles of safe and accessible biking and walking paths. This initiative, set to be completed by 2030, will ultimately link Forest Park to the Gateway Arch National Park in the east and from Fairground Park in the north to Tower Grove Park in the south.
“Brickline Greenway demonstrates the strength of collaboration, and we’re extremely thankful to Washington University in St. Louis for their generous commitment and partnership in realizing this project’s ambitious vision, which is crucial for attracting additional funding to benefit the community,” stated Susan Trautman, Great Rivers’ CEO. “It’s motivating to witness the extent to which WashU prioritizes a lively, interconnected St. Louis area where everyone has chances to succeed.”
WashU also supported Forest Park Forever’s “Imagine the Glade” initiative. The contributions will revamp Steinberg Rink and convert the surrounding 22 acres into the Glade, a newly envisioned year-round venue featuring a rooftop patio, dining establishment, and even water play areas.
Moreover, the university’s running community has experienced increased involvement with the Greater St. Louis Marathon. Recently, WashU collaborated with the organization to host a complimentary 314 Day fun run that commenced and concluded at Brookings Hall. Additionally, WashU sponsored the marathon on April 26 in downtown St. Louis.
“At WashU, we are dedicated to fostering health and wellness — not solely on our campus but throughout the St. Louis area,” remarked Lisa Weingarth, senior advisor to the chancellor and executive director of the “In St. Louis, For St. Louis” initiative. “We appreciate our community partners who are broadening access to recreational activities and are proud to support them in helping more St. Louisans flourish.”
