The Peabody Awards Board of Jurors revealed the recipients chosen to highlight the most engaging and motivating narratives showcased in broadcasting and streaming media throughout 2024.
The recipients were determined by a unanimous decision from 27 jurors, sifting through over 1,000 submissions across television, podcasts/radio, and online platforms in categories such as entertainment, news, documentaries, arts, children’s/youth, public service, and interactive/immersive content.
“The recipients of the 85th annual Peabody Awards represent a diverse array of modern and historical subjects, encompassing the conflict in Gaza, rural health services, a focus on disabilities, authoritarian leadership, and sexual violence,” stated Jeffrey Jones, executive director of Peabody. “These works warrant acknowledgment and celebration for their power to educate audiences about global matters or foster joy and community through impactful entertainment.”
Among the 34 total awards, Netflix garnered the highest number with six, trailed by HBO/Max with four, PBS with three, and FX/Hulu and Al Jazeera each with two. Documentaries led the charge this year with 12 awards, followed by entertainment with seven and four each in interactive/immersive programming, podcasts/radio, and news.
Peabody has also previously disclosed two additional specialty awards. Andrea Mitchell received the Peabody Career Achievement Award, while “Saturday Night Live” was honored with the Institutional Award.
The recipients of the 85th annual Peabody Awards will be honored on June 1 at a ceremony at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles, featuring Roy Wood Jr. as the host. This marks Peabody’s second consecutive year holding the ceremony in Los Angeles. Bob Bain Productions will produce the ceremony, with Delta as the sponsor and Variety as the media partner.
Peabody is headquartered at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.
