Dear FSU community,
Today, we witnessed a heartbreaking and irrational act of violence at the core of our campus.
During lunchtime, an active shooter opened fire at the Student Union. Two individuals lost their lives, and six others sustained injuries.
We are devastated. We share in the sorrow of the families, friends, and loved ones of those who perished. We are embracing those who are injured and standing beside all who are affected.
I have been in ongoing communication with our law enforcement and emergency response teams since the onset of the incident. The FSU Police Department, in collaboration with the Tallahassee Police Department, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the Florida Highway Patrol, acted swiftly and effectively. FSU Police neutralized the threat and averted an even greater calamity. I am thankful for their bravery and dedication.
At this moment, our priority is to provide care for individuals. This includes those impacted and their families. It involves students, faculty, and staff who were in proximity and are now struggling to comprehend their experience. Furthermore, it encompasses every person within our campus community who is feeling unsettled or overwhelmed.
We are collaborating closely with our leadership, law enforcement, and mental health professionals to ensure that everyone receives the necessary support. If you are facing difficulties, please connect with our Counseling & Psychological Services team at (850) 644-TALK (8255). You are not alone.
Additional updates will follow in the coming days, providing more time for reflection and healing. For now, we grieve collectively. We support one another. And we honor our identity.
We are Florida State. We are family. And we stand united.
Sincerely,
Richard McCullough
President
