Erin McGlothlin was appointed as the Gloria M. Goldstein Professor of Holocaust Studies within the Arts & Sciences at WashU on March 20. The ceremony featured a greeting from Feng Sheng Hu, the Richard G. Engelsmann Dean of Arts & Sciences and the Lucille P. Markey Distinguished Professor; comments from Matt Erlin, chair of comparative literature and thought in Arts & Sciences; followed by Provost Beverly Wendland who presided over McGlothlin’s installation and presented her with the medallion.
In her address titled “The Enduring Inquiry of My Academic Career,” McGlothlin highlighted the importance of Holocaust representation in literature and cinema, focusing particularly on portrayals of Holocaust perpetrators in both fictional and nonfictional narratives. “I have come to understand with clarity and determination that the intricate, vast, and at times perplexing history, legacy, and portrayal of the Nazi genocide of European Jews is a topic that will perpetually captivate me, challenge me, and elicit far more inquiries than I will be able to resolve,” she stated.
McGlothlin expressed gratitude towards her family, colleagues, and students for their encouragement throughout her scholarly and research endeavors. “My development as a scholar, educator, leader, and individual is a reflection of the collectively supportive environment I have experienced at WashU over the past 23 and a half years,” she commented.
