Florida State University’s School of Theatre showcases Karen Zacarías’ lauded play, “The Sins of Sor Juana,” derived from the life and works of 17th-century Latin American poet and philosopher Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.

Even under the scrutiny of the Inquisition, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’s verses shimmered with zeal and resistance, sparking independence among elite women. Alarmed by her influence, her foes employed a mercenary to subdue her. Their passionate, clever, and romantic clash left one question: Who would capitulate? Karen Zacarías’ celebrated play asserts that well-mannered women seldom shape history.

“Sor Juana’s tale embodies tenacity, intellect, and the struggle for self-expression in a world that aims to stifle strong spirits,” remarked Monika Gossmann, assistant professor of performance. “Through an energetic blend of dance, music, Indigenous movement, and swordplay, our gifted cast breathes life into this powerful story with sincerity and fervor. This production honors Hispanic heritage and invites audiences to connect with a narrative that transcends eras.”
