Guy Palmer, a prominent authority in worldwide health and contagious diseases, is set to present the 2025 University of Georgia George H. Boyd Lecture on April 17 at the Coverdell Center.
A Regents’ Professor of Pathology and Infectious Diseases at Washington State University, Palmer established the Paul G. Allen School for Global Health and currently occupies the position of senior director of Global Health. Additionally, he is a member of the advisory council for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, one of the 27 institutes and centers within the National Institutes of Health.
In 2006, Palmer was admitted to the U.S. National Academy of Medicine, is a Medical Sciences Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, and a founding member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences, where he held the presidency from 2012 to 2013.
His lecture will address how ecological conditions and availability of resources influence global health issues. Entitled “Addressing One Health challenges unique to low-income communities: Insights from East Africa and Central America,” the presentation will be categorized into three themes: early childhood nutrition, resistance to antibiotics, and rabies management in Africa.
Palmer stresses the significance of universities like UGA in confronting these challenges by encouraging interdisciplinary partnerships among public health, veterinary medicine, and environmental science.
“UGA is ideally positioned to address these difficulties,” he stated. “With its veterinary school, infectious disease research, and a new medical college in development, it possesses all the elements necessary. Students aspire to make a difference, and universities are where that passion converges with expertise to tackle pressing issues.”
Open to the public at no charge, the George H. Boyd Distinguished Lecture Series pays tribute to the former dean of the UGA Graduate School, recognized for his dedication to education and research. The series is backed by the Office of Research and the William S. and Elizabeth K. Boyd Foundation. Each lecture features nationally recognized figures and policymakers in science, education, and related areas discussing the implications of research on current educational issues.
The 2025 Boyd Lecture is scheduled for April 17 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in Room 175 of the Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences. Following the lecture, a reception will be hosted in the Coverdell lobby.
