Lockdown Browser V3
Students will be sent to Yale University’s LockDown Browser installation download page and, if given permission, will start installing on their computers as soon as an instructor utilizes a Canvas quiz with Lockdown Browser features.
When this software is installed, it disables basic OS features including printing, screen capture, tab switching, and more while being evaluated.
Free Trial
Respondus Lockdown Browser V3 offers a free trial if your university conducts online assessments and quizzes. By limiting students’ ability to print, copy, access unapproved URLs, or use other programs during exams, this configurable browser deters cheating. Students must have administrator permissions on their personal laptops or computers in order to install it even though it is available on all school computers.
Utilizing the Lockdown Browser is simple after installation. Simply log into your Canvas course and choose the quiz that requires it. You will then be prompted to dismiss any open programs and grant access to the camera. After selecting OK, start taking your exam with the understanding that it won’t let you leave until the graded results are in.
A successful proctoring solution is produced by Respondus Monitor. Exam sessions are captured on video and audio by students’ webcams, which are then analyzed by the Monitor engine for telltale indicators of cheating before delivering results to Canvas teachers so they may act swiftly to stop cheaters.
In addition to monitoring pupils, this software prevents them from using timer applications, virtual machines, screen-capture apps, instant messaging tools, and remote desktop programs. Additionally, right-clicking options and keyboard shortcuts are restricted. It is compatible with Blackboard, Brightspace, Canvas, Moodle, and Schoology systems and is thus available to NMSU students as well as instructors.
On a computer to be used as a testing site, Lockdown Browser can be downloaded for free from the NMSU website and installed following the instructions. Make sure virus protection is turned off before taking an online test using it to ensure best performance. This will make its functionality more certain.
It’s possible that your antivirus software is preventing you from downloading or installing your browser if you’re having trouble. If this is the case, turning off virus protection should enable further investigation; after doing so, try accessing the exam in a browser to see if it functions. Consult the support of the antivirus manufacturer if it still doesn’t work.
Supports Proctoring
One of the many solutions available to stop cheating on online tests is browser lockdown software, but it has a number of drawbacks of its own. Notably, it does not record sound or capture video, nor can it verify who uses this software to take exams online. It also does not block access to other browser tabs, programs, or desktop features, nor can it detect whether students switched devices during testing.
To maintain the security of your assessment, it is essential that you adhere to recommended practices when employing browser lockdown software to give quizzes or exams. Before distributing graded exams, create a brief practice test to help students become familiar with the program. Instruct students to download the most recent version from their website first before activating the extension in Blackboard by clicking the “Require Respondus Lockdown Browser” building block.
For the remote proctoring of tests or examinations, Lockdown browser now supports Zoom or Microsoft Teams videoconferencing solutions. In order to keep an eye on their students while they take their tests, instructors can organize a Zoom session for testing time. Instructors can also select thumbnail recordings of parts of students’ recorded testing sessions that have been highlighted for additional review.
Two online proctoring technologies that easily connect with Blackboard and are made to help maintain academic integrity when administering exams remotely have just been licensed by CUNY. This summer, all Blackboard courses will have access to Respondus Monitor and Respondus Lockdown Browser; to use these in an exam, just use the “Require Respondus Lockdown browser” building block in an exam module.
A compatible device with an internal or external camera, an internet connection, and the Respondus plugin for your favorite browser must be installed in order to use Respondus Lockdown browser examinations. When this plugin is turned on, a pop-up will appear and ask you for your Start Code, which you must enter when distributing any quizzes or tests you create.
Accessibility
A number of assistive technologies have been carefully considered in the development of LockDown Browser and Monitor. Both have undergone extensive testing to ensure that they adhere to the web content accessibility standards set forth in our Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT). LockDown Browser also complies with screen reader requirements and provides flexible configuration options like voice recognition to meet each student’s unique needs.
Additionally, both products’ student-facing instructions are easily accessible online to guarantee that students may pass exams that call for LockDown Browser or Monitor. These documents include directions for setting up and using Respondus video conferencing tools for proctoring examinations in either Canvas or Blackboard Learn, as well as information on how students can download the browser to take quizzes in either Canvas or Blackboard Learn.
Students who are taking tests that call for the LockDown Browser will be routed to a special URL in Canvas, where they will be asked to download it and start taking the test in this particular browser. Once downloaded, their exam is locked into this specific browser and cannot be printed, copied, opened in another window, closed, or used to access other websites or apps until it has been turned in for grading.
To proctor online tests for their students, instructors can use LockDown Browser along with Zoom’s video conferencing function or Respondus Monitor. Instructors will monitor exam candidates in real time while keeping an eye out for any indications of cheating while having each exam student’s webcam record them.
During tests, students can choose to turn off Respondus Monitor or Zoom’s recording function, allowing them to utilize their own devices while still having access to institutional services like UB Learns and the campus network. nonetheless, they should be aware that during a LockDown Browser test, dictation software like Nuance Dragon cannot be utilized; nonetheless, Zoom material is still an option for reading material off the screen. For more information on this topic, consult the documentation on UB Learns.
