Anoushka Shankar is a sitar musician who has flourished beyond being a prodigy from a renowned lineage.
Her father, Ravi Shankar, was the most prominent sitar player globally, and she shared the stage and recorded with him during her teenage years.
Three decades and 11 Grammy nominations later, her journey is prosperous. On March 20 at 7:30 p.m., she will grace Hodgson Concert Hall for her first appearance in almost 25 years.
Shankar is celebrating the completion of her recent trilogy of mini-albums — “Chapter I: Forever, For Now,” “Chapter II: How Dark it Is Before Dawn,” and “Chapter III: We Return to Light” — with an innovative new live performance. These pieces were crafted and released consecutively during two years of a groundbreaking, creatively invigorating global tour with a continually evolving program, where the presentation of each chapter influenced the creation of the next.
After first delving into the ephemeral, bittersweet delight of a summer afternoon on “Chapter I” and exploring a restorative, womb-like night on “Chapter II,” “Chapter III” concludes the journey, guiding the audience through each segment and into the radiant warmth of morning — a period of strength, wisdom, and transformation.
With 13 solo albums and an honorary degree in music from Oxford University to her name, Shankar has dedicated her career to reshaping the norms of sitar playing. Accompanied by an ensemble renowned for their limitless virtuosity, delicacy, and aptitude for improvisation, this performance showcases Shankar as she broadens the lexicon of her sitar, manipulating and altering sound to forge an audacious new Indo-futurist perspective in her music.
This event is made possible by Charlie and Teresa Friedlander, Sandy Strother Hudson and Cecil C. Hudson, and Greg and Pamela Mitsoff.
